The first
Scotch Malt Whisky Society bar outside
of Scotland is celebrating its first 25
years in England's capital city with
tastings and the release of a limited
edition whisky to mark the milestone and
non members are welcome to join the
celebrations.
The world’s largest whisky club, The
Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), is
marking the 25th anniversary of its
London members' rooms at 19 Greville
Street, Hatton Garden, with a series of
special events and the release of a
limited-edition bottle and non-members
are welcome to join in the celebrations.
The highlight of the festivities at the
SMWS Hatton Garden London whisky bar,
which offers over 500 limited-edition
single malts, is The Gathering on
Wednesday, 25th September. This event
will feature a tasting of four 25 Year
Old whiskies, led by the Society’s
Master Ambassador, John McCheyne. Other
anniversary events include tastings with
Glenallachie distillery ambassador Ronan
Currie (today 18th September) and
Georgie Bell, co-founder of The Heart
Cut (24th September), all of which are
open to whisky enthusiasts outside of
the Society.
To commemorate the occasion, the Society
is launching a special limited-edition
single cask whisky. Named 'A Silver
Darling', this whisky was distilled in
1999—the year the Greville Street
location opened—and matured for 19 years
in an Oloroso sherry butt before
spending five years in a first-fill
Pedro Ximénez hogshead.
Founded in Edinburgh in 1983, the
Society has grown to over 41,000 members
globally, with branches in countries
such as Taiwan, China, and Japan. The
Greville Street members' rooms were its
first venue outside Scotland, and over
the years have attracted notable guests,
including chef Jamie Oliver’s team and
Westminster MPs, thanks to its central
London location.
Simone Malavolta, General Manager at
Greville Street, said: "We have built an
incredible community of like-minded
whisky fans over the years, many of whom
have developed life-long friendships
over a few drams. We believe whisky
brings people together, and invite
anyone who is interested in what we do
to join us as we celebrate this
milestone, and toast the next 25 years
of flavour discovery together."
