Smoky Scot Island Peat Edition Orkney Release

Aceo Spirits has announced the launch of Smoky Scot Island Peat Edition: Orkney Release single malt whisky, the first expression in a new series exploring the distinctive peat character of Scotland's island whiskies. The limited-edition release expands the Smoky Scot brand beyond its established Islay expression, giving whisky drinkers the opportunity to discover a different style of island peat smoke.

The original Smoky Scot Islay expression is described as a bold and distinctive heavily peated Islay single malt Scotch whisky, capturing the characteristic smoke, maritime influence and powerful flavours associated with Scotland’s most famous whisky island. The new Smoky Scot Island Peat Edition: Orkney Release takes the brand in a different direction, using Orcadian single malt Scotch whisky to showcase the gentler character of peat found on Orkney.

Orkney is renowned for its heather-rich peat, which can produce a particularly fragrant and nuanced style of smoke. In this new Smoky Scot expression, that influence is described as floral, gently earthy and aromatic, allowing the underlying honeyed sweetness, fruit and delicate spice character of the whisky to remain prominent. Smoke is still central to the whisky’s character, but the result is said to offer a softer and more restrained interpretation of the Smoky Scot style.

The Smoky Scot Island Peat Edition Orkney Release sits alongside the original Islay expression, which has developed a strong following among lovers of heavily peated Scotch whisky. Rather than replicating the powerful Islay profile, the Orkney release demonstrates how the character of peat can vary significantly according to its geographical origin and the whisky produced from it.

The new series therefore provides an opportunity to explore the diversity of Scottish island whisky, beginning with Orkney, while retaining the smoky identity that has become synonymous with Smoky Scot. Future releases will allow the brand to explore further interpretations of island peat and the influence it can have on single malt Scotch whisky.

Aceo Spirits and Smoky Scot

The new release comes from Aceo Spirits, which has been involved in the Scotch whisky industry for 27 years. The company has developed and established its own spirit brands, which are now sold internationally, including the award-winning and well-established Murray McDavid-inspired Scotch whisky and Aceo Spirits ranges.

Headquartered near Edinburgh, Aceo also maintains strong and longstanding connections with Speyside, one of Scotland’s most important whisky-producing regions. The company operates whisky maturation warehouses at Kinloss, Coleburn Distillery and Royal Brackla Distillery, collectively holding around 100,000 casks. Aceo also has its own Craft Bottling Hall at Dandaleith, near Craigellachie, providing facilities for bottling its whisky portfolio.

Aceo is also undertaking the revival of the historic Dallas Dhu Distillery in Speyside. Originally built in 1898 and closed since 1983, the distillery is being brought back to life with plans to restart whisky production alongside the development of a state-of-the-art visitor attraction designed to celebrate and preserve its Victorian heritage.

The Smoky Scot Island Peat Edition: Orkney Release represents the latest chapter in Aceo's development of the Smoky Scot brand, combining the company's experience in Scotch whisky with a focus on the distinctive regional characteristics of Scotland’s island whiskies.

Bottled at what should be a flavoursome 46% ABV, the Smoky Scot Island Peat Edition: Orkney Release is presented at natural colour and without chill filtration, retaining the whisky's natural appearance and character.
