Edinburgh
based independent bottler Skene whisky
release two Speyside region, American oak matured, single
cask, single malt whiskies, Skene
Glenrothes 11 Year Old and Braeval 6
Year Old.
Following
on from their "Black Tartan 88" Scotch
blended malt whisky release in September
last year and a trio of single malt,
single cask expressions just before
Christmas, Edinburgh based independent
bottler Skene Whisky has released two
more Scotch single cask, single malt
whiskies, this time from the Speyside
whisky region.
The first is a Glenrothes 11 Year Old
single malt which was distilled in 2009,
fully matured in a hogshead Cask Number
7711 and bottled in 2021, it is
naturally coloured, non chill filtered
and has been bottled at 48% ABV. The
single cask produced just 388 bottles
which have a tempting RRP of only £45.80
for a 70cl bottle.
The second release is a Braeval 2014
vintage, although it isn't stated on the
label I am told that this Braeval
expression was distilled on the 30th
September 2014 then matured in a
American Oak Hogshead Cask Number
9900153 for 6 years and bottled in
December 2020. The single cask
produced just 327 bottles, naturally
coloured and non chill filtered it has
been bottled at 50% ABV, again with
natural colour and no chill filtration.
Price at £45.80 for a 70cl bottle.
The two new single cask malt releases,
together with earlier Skene expressions
and a selection of third-party vintage
bottlings, are now available from Skene
Scotch Whisky’s online shop.
I haven't tasted any of the two new
whiskies and Skene hasn't released them
with any tasting notes to give you an
idea of what you will find in the
bottles, they also don't make it
altogether clear on the bottle labels
that they are single cask whiskies, or
state the cask numbers, distillation or
bottling dates and in the case of the
Braeval release it has no age
statement even though they have given me
all this info. Still an affordable range
for whisky drinkers to explore but they
could do themselves and whisky drinkers
a favour and provide all the details
they have on each whisky on the label.
Skene tells me that after a few years
away from bottle sales they plan to
release a number of new expressions
through 2021 - "Skene Reserve", single
cask premium bottlings of vintage malt
whisky such as The Macallan 30 year old.
"Skene Sherry Editions" will be
sherry-matured single malts, normally
bottled at 48% ABV and aimed squarely at
whisky drinkers. "Skene American Oak
Editions" will be ex-bourbon single malt
bottlings, again normally bottled at a
flavoursome 48% ABV. "Skene Peated Malt
Editions" will be peated single malt
expressions, yet again normally
bottled at 48% ABV.
You will find Skene whisky available
from Skene's own website and it can
occasionally be found available from
specialist online retailers
such as
Master of
Malt
