Sailor's Home Irish Whiskey

12th January 2021
Introducing Sailor's Home, a new Irish whiskey brand which has launched with three new expressions.

Sailor's Home is a new brand of Irish whiskey which is billed as a contemporary and premium new Irish whiskey brand. It has launched with three expressions here in the UK - The Haven, The Journey and The Horizon.

There is no Sailor's Home distillery, at least not that I am aware of, but you never know in the future given the rate distilleries continue to increase in Ireland cashing in on the increasing popularity and demand for Irish whiskey.

The three whiskey's have been crafted by master whiskey maker Dr. Jack ”íSť who has 40+ years of experience blending Irish whiskey; I am told that Sailorís Homeís distinct flavours have been shaped by an adventurous approach to blending, ageing and finishing. Sailorís Home seeks to take drinkers on a new journey, with flavours that push the boundaries of what is expected of a premium Irish Whiskey.

Dr. Jack ”íSť, Sailorís Homeís Master Whiskey Maker commented: "Weíve created a range of three truly distinctive whiskeys made in Ireland but shaped by the world. Itís been amazing to work with these liquids, being adventurous with flavours is what Sailorís Home is all about. We look to explore and go beyond, so that a new generation of Irish whiskey drinkers can join us along this journey of discovery."

Sailor's Home The Haven RRP £52.95, The Journey RRP £41.95 and The Horizon RRP £58.95 have all been bottled at 45% ABV and are all non chill-filtered, you will find them available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

The Journey Irish Whiskey Review

The Journey Irish Whiskey (The Explorer Series) initially aged in virgin American oak, followed by recasking into American bourbon barrels before being blended with malt Irish whiskey that has been matured in American bourbon and finished in Jamaican rum casks. The resulting liquid is said to have tropical fruit and rum notes with sticky toffee pudding and malty depth before a long, almost sweet finish.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Butterscotch, toasted oak, dark rum notes.

Taste: Sticky toffee, rum roundness perfectly balanced with malt depth.

Finish: Ripe banana, molasses & vanilla.

The Haven Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Review

The Haven Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is Sailorís Home first release of the unique single pot still Irish Whiskey style - created with both malted and un-malted Irish barley and oats that is then triple pot distilled which they say has resulted in a rich, creamy and smooth distillate. The new make spirit is initially matured in American bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, giving the liquid a flavour full of pot still spices, roasted almonds and vanilla notes whilst the finish is long with brown sugar and ripe black fruits.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Green grapes, warm spice & honeyed oak.

Taste: Captivating creamy mouthfeel, pot spices, roasted almonds & vanilla notes.

Finish: Brown sugar, ripe black fruits.

The Horizon 10 Year Old Irish Whiskey Review

The Horizon 10 Year Old Irish Whiskey (The Islands Series) is crafted from Irish malt and grain whiskeys that have been matured for at least 10 years in American bourbon barrels. The whiskey is then filled into carefully selected Barbados rum casks for a finishing period of 6 months which they tell me has introduced lush, refined flavour twists typical of Caribbean rums like caramelised banana and rich brown sugar.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Mouth-watering brown sugar and ripe tropical fruits.

Taste: Melting pot of malted honey, oak depth, silk rum, vanilla and caramelised banana.

Finish: Buttery toffee with orange zest.

Which Irish whiskey distillery each of the three new Sailor's Home whiskey's originates from is not revealed but going by the prices they certainly rate them highly, I haven't tasted any of them myself so I cannot comment.

Sailor's Home The Haven RRP £52.95, The Journey RRP £41.95 and The Horizon RRP £58.95 have all been bottled at 45% ABV and are all non chill-filtered.
