Review of
Douglas Laing's smoky, fruity, maritime
blended malt, mature Rock Island 21 Year
Old.
 Douglas Laing
unveiled the Rock Island
21 Year Old earlier this year, it is a
limited release expression with a total
of 4,200 bottles available.
Created using a blend of single malts
distilled on the Whisky Islands of
Islay, Arran, Jura and Orkney, Rock
Island 21 is said to encapsulate the
archetypal salty, smoky, peppery warmth
that Island Whiskies are famed for.
Rock Island 21 Year Old has been bottled
at 46.8% ABV, non Chill filtered and is
a limited release of 4,200 bottles and
has a retail price of around £78.95.

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A lovely enticing creamy vanilla infused
peat smoke, on its fruity side there is
a touch of apricot, apple, pear and some
citrusy sugars sweetening things up a
bit.
Taste:
A deliciously subtle apricot and apple
fruitiness is equally matched by a
lovely sweet peat smokiness, a touch of
creamy vanilla, the smokiness becomes
more ashy with a lovely peppery edge.
Finish:
A long finish which sees the apple and
pear infused sweet peat smoke with a
peppery edge hanging in there for an age
before bittering out.
Comment:
There is a lovely sense of maturity and
quality from nose to finish, the folks
at Douglas Laing do make a good job of
putting these blended malts together. it
is no peat monster, it is a well
balanced, mature, smoky, fruity dram
which is subtle and complex and
undoubtedly a maritime malt if ever
there was one. Great value also,
currently £78.95 from Master of Malt.
