Redbreast Adds 27 Year Old To Core Range

5th March 2020
Introducing the Redbreast 27 Year Old a cask strength combination of American Bourbon, sherry and port cask matured Irish pot still whiskey.

Redbreast 27 Year OldIrish Distillers today unveiled a new permanent addition to their Redbreast Irish single pot still whiskey range, the Redbreast 27 Year Old.

The cask strength Redbreast 27 Year Old is now the oldest permanent expression in the popular single pot still range but it isn't simply just an older expression of the celebrated mix of bourbon and sherry cask matured Redbreast pot still whiskey which we are familiar with, for the new 27 year old Midleton distillery's creative blending team of Master Blender Billy Leighton and Blender Dave McCabe have added whiskey matured in ruby port barrels from Portugal’s Douro Valley into the mix which they say brings a new complexity and depth to the Redbreast collection.

They say that the ruby port barrels have imparted fleshy fruit characteristics with notes of toasted oak which complements the rich and robust style of the distillate.

Master Blender Billy Leighton commented: "It gives us great pleasure to reveal the latest member of the Redbreast Irish Whiskey family. In creating this whiskey, Dave and I drew on our experience of working with sherry and other wine casks over the years as we have evolved the range. This time, we wanted to push the boundaries and yet create an expression that would seamlessly take its place at the head of the family. Nearly three decades in the making, we are incredibly proud to present Redbreast 27 Year Old – a cask strength Redbreast expression that is a joy to behold in each and every sip."

Blender Dave McCabe adds: "Bottled at 54.6% cask strength, the ruby port barrels contribute notes of mango, pineapple and berry to the robust flavour of Redbreast 27 Year Old, clearly distinguishing it from the previous expressions in the collection, treading a beautiful balance of tradition and innovation."

I haven't yet had a chance to taste it so I cant comment on its quality but given my experience of older expressions of Redbreast I have high hopes for this one and given it has been bottled at cask strength this should add to the flavour pleasure and it should also make it interesting going forward as no two batches will be 100% alike. It will be interesting to see what the ruby port barrels adds to the pleasure, meanwhile the official tasting note is below for you to consider and if you fancy a bottle for yourself the first batch will be available from this month with a RRP of €495.

You will no doubt soon find the new Redbreast 27 Year Old along with the current Redbreast whiskey core range available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt

Redbreast 27 Year Old Review

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A mix of exotic fruits and red berries, complemented by fresh herbs and wood spices. Vanilla sweetness and treacle toffee combine with the nuttiness of toasted oak.

Taste: Incredibly rich in texture with a luxurious combination of ripe stone fruits and summer berries, balanced by the prickle of a hint of chilli oil. Cherry menthol, vanilla and cinnamon sweet spices complement red pepper, nutmeg and toasted oak.

Finish: A satisfyingly long balance of ripe fruit and wood spices, worthy of a journey of nearly three decades.
