Powers John’s Lane Release 12 Year Old

The Powers John’s Lane Distillery was renowned for its Pot Still Irish whiskeys, bursting with flavour and character and made famous by one of Ireland’s most popular brands, Powers Gold Label.

When the renowned brewing and distilling historian Alfred Barnard, visited John’s Lane in 1886, he described the whiskey as “delicious and finer than anything we had hitherto tasted. It was as perfect in flavour, and as pronounced in the ancient aroma of Irish whiskey so dear to the hearts of connoisseurs, as one could possibly desire”.

Following the merger of three family businesses - Powers, Jameson and Cork Distilleries Company (producers of Paddy whiskey) - John’s Lane distillery closed and whiskey production moved to a new purpose built distillery in Midleton, County Cork in 1975. Here, the new stills and maturation processes were carefully designed and built to replicate the particular characteristics of the three founding families.

Powers John’s Lane Release
This first expression of a Powers Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is entitled John’s Lane Release and celebrates the origin of the Powers whiskey tradition by providing a glimpse of the whiskey style that made Powers famous.

Using a Pot Still distillate which is true to the original style of John’s Lane, the whiskey has been matured for at least 12 years, mainly in first fill American bourbon casks with a small contribution of distillate which has been matured in Oloroso sherry butts. The result is a Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey of outstanding flavour and complexity, which provides a perfect tribute to the spiritual home of one of Ireland’s most loved whiskeys.

Powers John's Lane Release Tasting Notes

Powers John's Lane 12 year old was bottled at 46% ABV and non chill filtered.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: New leather, flowery, dark chocolate, coffee, touch of citrus.

Taste: Full bodied in the mouth, oily. Delicate bitter sweet, dried fruits, honey, toffee, coconut and spicy. Oaky.

Finish: Honey, spice, chocolate and a drying oakiness.

Comment: This is undoubtedly still related to the other members of the Powers family but this is definitely a delicious big oily woody Irish Single Pot Still whiskey.

SMW Score 95 /100
