release anniversary edition to mark 10
years of Peat Monster.
10 years ago since those innovative
folks at Compass Box created Compass Box
Peat Monster for us. It was originally a
bespoke blend of peaty single malts –
named simply ‘Monster’ and it was
created for the owners of the Park
Avenue Liquor Shop in New York. Luckily
for us it was so well received that
Compass Box appended ‘The Peat’ to the
front of the name and decided to share
the idea with the rest of the world.
To celebrate this 10 year milestone
Compass Box have released a special
limited edition of The Peat Monster,
which is now available.
created a unique recipe for The Peat
Monster Tenth Anniversary Limited
Its smoky, peated character is still
shaped by a combination of Islay, Island
and Highland single malts. However, some
older casks of peaty Highland single
malt bring extra richness, while the
addition of one of their rarest archive
whiskies adds finesse, complexity and
To balance the extra flavour and
intensity, they have bottled this
limited edition at a slightly higher
48.9% ABV. The bespoke label was created
for us by famous US artist and whisky
lover Mark Burckhardt and only 5,970
bottles were produced.
As usual Compass Box do not disclose the
source of the whisky in this peaty
blended malt but they do give us a clue
which will help the knowledgeable whisky
drinkers amongst you identify what is in
it. It contains Islay single malts
distilled on the south shore of the
island and in the village of Port Askaig
these are balanced with a rich, smoky
Highland single malt and a fruity oily
malt from the village of Brora.
Primarily a mix of first-fill and refill
American oak, plus approximately 2% new
French oak for finishing. It was Bottled
at 48.9% ABV and as we have come to
expect from Compass Box it is not chill
filtered and natural colour.
Available from specialist whisky
retailers now priced around £83.
