Old Pulteney
release the second instalment in their
Coastal Series, Old Pulteney Port which
aims to take you on a journey from the
Highlands of Scotland to the Douro Valley in Northern
Portugal.
Following
on from the first expression of The
Coastal Series, Old Pulteney Pineau des
Charentes, which brought flavours of the
French coastline to The Maritime Malt,
through the use of ex-Pineau des
Charentes wine casks, Old Pulteney
today unveiled the second instalment in
its limited edition Coastal Series: Old
Pulteney Port.
The Coastal Series embarks on a
captivating journey, guiding whisky
connoisseurs through a global odyssey of
cask maturations. In crafting this
series, Old Pulteney has joined forces
with distillers from coastal regions
worldwide, allowing their cherished
whisky to undergo additional maturation
in a carefully curated selection of
casks. The outcome is a quartet of
exquisitely distinct, limited edition
expressions that introduce captivating
new coastal flavours to the world of
"The Maritime Malt."
The second release in this quartet, Old
Pulteney Port, is said to represent a
harmonious fusion of flavours derived
from two iconic spirits, both intimately
connected to the sea: single malt Scotch
whisky from the Pulteney distillery in
Wick in the Scottish Highlands and Port
from the Douro Valley in Northern
Portugal. After a meticulous maturation
in second-fill ex-bourbon casks, this
expression underwent a secondary aging
in hand-picked Ruby Port Pipes and
Barriques, absorbing the opulent nuances
of this delightful fortified wine. Much
like Old Pulteney, the creation of Port
boasts centuries of tradition and holds
a significant place in the history of
its region.
The marriage of American oak casks, Ruby
Port Pipes, and Ruby Port Barriques is a
testament to their coastal heritage,
which the distillery tells me has
resulted in a remarkable single malt
characterised by a harmonious interplay
of sweet and spicy notes, underscored by
a hint of minerality for which Old
Pulteney is renowned.
Old Pulteney Port is described as having
a captivating rose gold hue, tantalising
the senses with an alluring blend of
aromatic and opulent scents. The nose is
greeted by unmistakable dried fruit
notes, featuring hints of sultanas and
velvety vanilla. These aromas give way
to a palate adorned with candied orange,
marzipan-encased cherries, and delicate
cinnamon swirls. The rich fruity
flavours imparted by the Pipe and
Barrique maturation are artfully
complemented by a subtle trace of
sea-salted essence, a tribute to the
Caithness Coast, the cherished home of
Old Pulteney.
Encased in a sleek ruby red packaging
that mirrors the deep hues of Port, the
presentation showcases an elegant
illustration of the Portuguese
coastline, accented with luxurious
golden detailing. Old Pulteney Port is
presented without chill filtration,
preserving its natural essence for an
authentic tasting experience.
Malcolm Waring, Distillery Manager at
Pulteney said: "It’s a true honour to
welcome the second expression in Old
Pulteney’s Coastal Series - Old Pulteney
Port. A delicious balance of the rich,
juicy flavours that comes from Port with
the sea-saltiness that Old Pulteney is
known and loved for, the result is an
exceptional single malt that deserves to
be savoured.
"Old Pulteney Port is a wonderful
addition to our series of limited
editions, shining a spotlight on another
coastal region through a beautiful cask
maturation, and follows from the success
of our first Coastal Series expression,
Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes,
perfectly."
