Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes Review

6th October 2022
Review of Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes the first of four new limited edition whiskies in 'The Coastal Series' from the Wick based distillery.

Old Pulteney Pineau des CharentesOld Pulteney, The Maritime Malt, has unveiled a new collection of whiskies, 'The Coastal Series' which launched this week with the the first release in the series, Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes.

The Coastal Series aims to take whisky drinkers on a worldwide voyage of exploration with Old Pulteney and the Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes expression is the first of four limited edition expressions which will make up the Coastal Series.

To create the series the Old Pulteney distillery which is located on one of the most northerly shores of the Caithness Coast, in rural Scotland, has teamed up with spirits makers from coastal locations around the world, further maturing its much-loved whisky in a specialist selection of casks and creating four unique, limited edition expressions that bring wonderful new coastal flavours to the ‘Maritime Malt’.

This first release in the series, the Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes, was initially matured in traditional American oak casks, and like all Old Pulteney whiskies matured at the Wick distillery it would have been influenced by coastal notes from the North Sea. It then underwent a further period of maturation in hand-selected ex-Pineau des Charente casks, created with French oak and carefully selected by  Master Blender Stuart Harvey. The result of the this further maturation in the French oak ex-Pineau des Charente casks the distillery tells me is a lighter, sweeter taste layered on the classic Old Pulteney base.

Malcolm Waring, Distillery Manager at Old Pulteney, said: "We’re very pleased to introduce Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes, the first in a new, exciting series by the brand. Old Pulteney’s past, present and taste is influenced by its home by the sea on the Caithness Coast, and The Coastal Series beautifully explores cask maturations that highlight wonderful expressions influenced by their global coastal homes.

"Our Pineau des Charentes expression is a beautifully light, fruity single malt that showcases both the flavours of our wonderfully matured spirit, but balanced with the rich sweetness of the Pineau des Charentes, resulting in a truly exquisite expression."

Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes is presented in a gold gift box that replicates the colour of golden sands with an intricate illustration of the French coastline, it has a RRP of £75 and will be available from specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop, Hard To Find Whisky and Master of Malt

Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A little sweet coconut amid the toffee and honey, some gentle vanilla. raisin and a wee touch of apricot jam, a little gentle spiced green apple and lemon citrus, some lovely sea salt.

Taste:  Honey infused, rich, juicy spiced raisins and sultanas with an apricot jam edge leads, quickly followed by pear and a touch of lemon citrus.

Finish: Sugar sweetened spiced, brandy soaked raisins and just a touch of apricot all with a sea salt edge, some late orange citrus. The sugar infused spices piggyback on the fruit long into the finish.

Comment: The fruitiness continues to build with each mouthful. the Pineau des Charentes casks have added a deliciously juicy fruitiness to the whisky, think of it as a cross between a sherry and brandy cask influence.

SMW Score 88/100
