The Glenlivet Sample Room Collection 21 Year Old & 25 Year Old

You may have noticed in recent times the lack of availability of The Glenlivet 21 Year Old and 25 Year Old (AKA XXV) expressions well the reason for that has become apparent as The Glenlivet distillery has announced the launch of The Glenlivet Sample Room Collection which launches with new Glenlivet 21 Year Old & 25 Year Old expressions which replace the expressions we were familiar with.

The Glenlivet describe the new Glenlivet Sample Room Collection 21 Year Old & 25 Year Old as "reimagined", the two new whiskies which have come together to form The Glenlivet Sample Room Collection have been finished in different types and combinations of casks than the original 21 & 25 year old expressions and the two new whiskies will be recognisable through their new bold and vibrant design.

The new Glenlivet 21 Year Old has been triple finished in first-fill Oloroso sherry, Troncais oak Cognac and Vintage Colheita port casks, The Glenlivet say that whisky enthusiasts will be able to indulge in the luscious notes of caramelised pears and juicy sultanas, with hints of warming ginger. Deriving from the Cognac cask influence, the flavour is intertwined with fragrant nutmeg and cinnamon, leaving a long and rich spice finish.

New levels of complexity and richness are said to be achieved with the new Glenlivet Sample Room Collection 25 Year Old single malt expression, finished in PX sherry and Troncais oak Cognac casks. The expression is said to be a true testimony to the care and craftsmanship that has gone into every drop. The taste is both rich and intense, yet silky and sweet with the double cask finish adding depth to the palate. Its enticing flavours of sweet fig and blood orange, deriving from the sherry influence, are complemented by the Cognac casks’ warming notes of ginger, toasted oak and a hint of charred pineapple, leaving a long, rich and sweet gentle spice finish.

Kevin Balmforth, The Glenlivet Cask Expert, commented: "This has been an exciting opportunity to elevate two iconic whiskies – our 21 and 25 Year Old Originals – developing an end result full of layers of flavour and richness. The Sample Room Collection from The Glenlivet is breaking new ground in whisky, setting new standards in taste and quality through craftsmanship and refined cask finishes."

There is no doubt that the old Glenlivet 21 Year Old and Glenlivet 25 Year Old which this new Glenlivet Sample Room Collection 21 Year Old & 25 Year Old replaces were outstanding whiskies and it does appear to be rather odd that The Glenlivet have changed the recipe which makes up these two cracking drams, I can only conclude that the reason they have done this is the availability of the maturing stock which went into these two whiskies, hopefully the two "reimagined" Glenlivet Sample Room Collection 21 Year Old and 25 Year Old match up to the whiskies they are superseding.

The Glenlivet 21 Year Old has a RRP of £215 and you will need even deeper pockets if you want to taste the Glenlivet 25 Year Old which has a RRP of £510 and both the new whiskies will be available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Hard To Find Whisky and Master of Malt
