Review of the
Malt Whisky Yearbook 2021 a book which
focuses on the facts & figures, history
and the latest bottlings from whisky
distilleries.
The
Malt Whisky Yearbook which is the work
of Ingvar Ronde and has been an annual
release since 2005, very much a
reference book which mainly focuses on
the facts & figures, history and recent
events of each distillery covered in the
book.
This latest edition as usual has been
fully revised and covers 665 malt whisky
distilleries around the world, most
space is allocated to the malt whisky
distilleries of Scotland, with most
established Scotch malt whisky
distilleries covered over at least one
page which details each distilleries
production facts and figures, history as
well as a brief listing of their current
whisky offerings and many of the
distilleries covered have one of two
tasting notes usually for their popular
core range bottlings giving readers an
insight into the style of whisky the
distillery produces.
The ever growing number of new Scotch
malt whisky distilleries are covered
over a half page each and perhaps of
interest to whisky enthusiasts and
collectors their is a section 'Closed Distilleries' which covers some
closed and even demolished distilleries
which are still of interest.
There is a section covering distilleries
around the globe - Europe, North
America, Australia & New Zealand, Asia,
Africa and South America. This would
have been a quickly expanding section in
recent years, although not as
detailed a section as the Scotch section
it certainly gives the reader an insight
into malt whisky which is now being
produced around the world. There is also
an entire chapter about the world's
leading independent bottlers.
The Malt Whisky Yearbook is primarily
but not just a reference book, there are
contributions from well known whisky
writers and commentators such as Charles
MacLean, Gavin D Smith and Ian
Wisniewski. You will also find a
comprehensive summary of the news and
trends in the whisky industry.
One small criticism I have is the reduction
in print size in places, considerably in some sections of the
book, making it difficult to comfortably
read in a dimly lit room while enjoying
a dram of your favourite single malt.
Perhaps it is just my eyesight but I
would say the content packed yearbook has outgrown the
size of the book and I would love to see
the Malt Whisky Yearbook presented in a
larger coffee table book format,
something like 30cm X 20cm, which which
would give space for decent
size images and a comprehensive list of
each distilleries core ranges with rated reviews
of each whisky, now that would be very
attractive.
