Review of the
new Macallan 12 year old Double Cask.
The
Macallan fans amongst you have probably
noticed by now that there is a new
Macallan expression on the shelves of
the whisky shops. You will be pleased to
hear that the new Macallan 12 Year Old
Double Cask is a traditional sherry
seasoned expression.
The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask
is a new interpretation of the signature
Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak we already know,
the Double Cask name does not refer to a
cask finish it refers to the two types
of casks which have been brought
together to create the Double Cask.
It has been created by bringing new oak
from America to Spain, where the oak
casks were crafted and Sherry-seasoned
before being shipped to the Macallan's
distillery on Speyside to mature for at
least twelve years. The whisky matured
in the Sherry-seasoned new American oak
casks was then united with whisky aged
in Sherry-seasoned European oak casks.
Commenting on Double Cask, Bob Dalgarno,
The Macallan Master Whisky Maker, said:
"This is a single malt which showcases a
true balance of character which results
in a fully rounded and distinctive
flavour profile. By combining wood
influences, we have been able to produce
a new Macallan which sits perfectly
between our existing Sherry Oak and Fine
Oak ranges."
Naturally coloured and bottled at 40%
ABV the new whisky will be a permanent
part of the Macallan core range and will
be available in the US, Russia, Asia, EU
(including UK, Spain, Sweden and
Netherlands).
The Macallan 12 Double Cask is
currently available from specialist
online whisky shops such as
Master of Malt priced at £48.45 which is a
little less than its £55 RRP. Also quite
a bit cheaper than the Macallan 12
Sherry Oak, but every bit as enjoyable.
