Scottish
auction site, Whisky Hammer auctions
oldest Macallan whisky ever bottled, The
Macallan 78 Year Old from the newly
launched 'Red Collection'.
The
newly launched
Macallan Red Collection which was
released on Thursday last week has
certainly made the whisky news headlines
for a number of reasons, firstly the age
of the whiskies in the collection which
launched with three ongoing
expressions, The Macallan 40, 50 and 60
Year Old at the heart of the collection
and these were accompanied by some of
the oldest bottlings ever released in
The Macallan's history, The Macallan 71,
74 and 78 year old.
The second reason the collection has
made the whisky news headlines, as you
may have already guessed is the price of
each whisky in the collection and as you
can imagine you will have needed very
deep pockets if you want to taste any of
them:
- The Macallan Red Collection 40
Year Old – RRP £11,300
- The Macallan Red Collection 50
Year Old – RRP £37,500
- The Macallan Red Collection 60
Year Old – RRP £49,000
- The Macallan Red Collection 71
Year Old – RRP £58,500
- The Macallan Red Collection 74
Year Old – RRP £61,500
- The Macallan Red Collection 78
Year Old – RRP £65,500
Even though the RRP on all six whiskies
is eye watering enough to mere mortal
whisky drinkers the price mark-up in
some of the online specialist whisky
retailers was just as eye watering for
example
The Whisky Shop had The Macallan 78
Year Old priced at £100,000, that's
£34,500 more than the RRP, and they
appear to have sold out! How many
bottles they sold I couldn't tell you
but it is certainly indicative of The
Macallan's selling power, £100,000 for a
whisky which no-one has tasted or
reviewed before buying, no matter how
old it is, is simply incredible and it
proves that no other whisky has the
money pulling power of The Macallan.
To mark the launch The Macallan are
auctioning off an extremely rare,
complete set of The Red Collection with
exclusive labels illustrated by Javi Aznarez whose work
will feature in Wes Anderson’s upcoming
feature, The French Dispatch. This set
will be
auctioned by Sotheby’s to raise funds
for global food charity City Harvest,
which redistributes surplus from the
food industry to vulnerable people
across London. The Sotheby’s auction
which will run from 22 October to 31 October 2020
is estimated to fetch between
£200,000 and £800,000.
If a complete Javi Aznarez illustrated set of
The Macallan Red Collection is a bit too
rich for you not to worry as
Aberdeenshire based online whisky
auction Whisky Hammer has informed me
that they have a bottle of the oldest whisky
in the collection and the oldest whisky
ever released by the distillery, The
Macallan Red Collection 78 Year Old up
for grabs in their current auction.
Given that the Macallan 78 Year Old was
listed in the Whisky Hammer auction only one
day after its release, and wondering how
this could have been possible to get
hold of a bottle so quickly and get it
authenticated and entered into the
auction I asked Whisky Hammer about it
and they told me: "It is being sold by a
private seller, not Whisky Hammer and
not Macallan".
At the time of typing this the auction
has four days to run and the current
bidding is £75,000 but the reserve has
not yet been met but it will certainly
be interesting to see if a whisky of
this price can be flipped so quickly for
a profit and what will the profit be.
Daniel Milne, Managing Director of
Whisky Hammer, said: "We’re really
excited to be able to offer something as
rare as this 78 year old expression from
The Macallan Red Collection for auction
and we expect a very high level of
interest in this lot. The Macallan is
one of the most well-known and loved
Scotch whisky brands and is regarded
globally as the epitome of quality and
taste – add to this the thrill of the
oldest single malt ever released by
Macallan, the end result is a true icon
in whisky history.
"As a Scottish family-run business we
have seen rapid growth since our
inaugural auction in 2016 – today we are
one of the largest online dedicated
whisky auction platforms globally. We’re
delighted to have been able to host such
an exclusive whisky which builds on our
growing reputation as a place for whisky
lovers and investors to buy and sell
these iconic whiskies."
If you do have deep enough pockets and
fancy getting your hands on any of the
whiskies in The Macallan Red Collection
you will find some bottlings still available from
The Whisky Shop and it still may be
worth keeping a look out at
The Whisky Exchange and
Master of Malt as amazingly these
bottles can sell out very quickly when
the shops list them.
