Loch Lomond Steam & Fire

18th August 2023
Loch Lomond Whiskies unveils Steam & Fire, finished in Heavily Charred Casks Steam & Fire pays homage to the extensive capabilities of the Loch Lomond Distillery.

Loch Lomond Steam FireIndependent distiller, Loch Lomond Whiskies, is expanding its impressive array of whiskies with the introduction of Loch Lomond Steam & Fire. This latest creation undergoes a unique finishing process in heavily charred American Oak casks, ignited at Loch Lomond Whiskies' very own traditional cooperage.

Representing an entirely novel concept for the distillery, Steam & Fire has been meticulously crafted to showcase its extensive expertise in distillation and maturation. The inspiration for this expression arises from the distillery itself—an extraordinary place where the convergence of alchemy, engineering, and time-honoured craftsmanship gives birth to an unparalleled whisky destination that stands apart from all others in the industry.

Situated in close proximity to the iconic Loch Lomond from which it takes its name, the distillery boasts remarkable feats of engineering, including Scotland's exclusive ensemble of Straight Neck Pot Stills. As the sole distiller in Scotland to employ these stills, Master Blender Michael Henry wields the power to shape flavour during distillation and maturation alike.

Furthermore, the distillery stands as one of only four in Scotland to house its own cooperage. Within this vibrant enclave, a skilled team of coopers expertly repair and char barrels, marking the final phase in the whisky crafting process prior to cask aging.

The journey of Steam & Fire commences with distillation in a harmonious combination of Straight Neck and traditional Swan Neck Pot Stills. Subsequent maturation takes place within first-fill Bourbon barrels and refill American Oak casks. This single malt is then bestowed with a distinctive character during a 10-month long finishing period in heavily charred American Oak casks.

Loch Lomond tells me that the deeply charred American Oak barrels significantly impact the whisky's profile, infusing it with a pronounced Demerara sugar influence. The resulting flavour profile is said to be a rich tapestry of orange, pear, and molten brown sugar notes, culminating in hints of dark chocolate and a gentle smoky finish.

Presented in vivid packaging hues of blue and red, mirroring the brand's colors and the cooperage aesthetic, Steam & Fire features imagery from around the distillery, showcasing the casks and unique stills. This striking visual concept aims to celebrate Loch Lomond's remarkable capabilities and kindle an emotional response, encapsulating the significance of both distillation and maturation in the whisky-making process.

Michael Henry, the Master Blender at Loch Lomond Whiskies, remarked, "Steam & Fire is unlike anything we have created at our distillery before.

"Intended to capture our extensive and unique capabilities in whisky making, it is a striking expression which speaks to the heart of what Loch Lomond Whiskies is trying to achieve and our ongoing experimentation with flavour.

"Steam & Fire is a representation of our quest to create whisky outside of the ordinary, bringing together our impressive capabilities in distillation and maturation."
