Lochlea
Distillery announces second annual Red
Wine Cask release for Summer 2026.
Available from 28th May 2026.

Lochlea Red Wine Cask 2026 release is
the second annual release of this
expression from the family-owned Lochlea
Distillery in Ayrshire, it is set to
arrive on 28th May.
Following the strong reception of last
year’s debut edition, the new expression
represents the next chapter in the
distillery’s evolving wine cask series,
highlighting its creative and considered
approach to cask maturation. The release
joins Lochlea's core Single Estate
range, a permanent collection of single
malts introduced in summer 2025.
The annual Red Wine Cask series draws
inspiration from the practice of
finishing mature spirit in specially
selected red wine casks sourced from
renowned wine-producing regions. Each
edition offers a unique profile shaped
by the characteristics of the chosen
casks, carefully selected to enhance
Lochlea's signature house style. As with
previous releases, availability will be
limited.
For Red Wine Cask 2026, the distillery
has taken whisky matured in first-fill
Bourbon barrels and finished it in
Sangiovese wine casks from Tuscany,
Italy. Bottled at 46% ABV, with natural
colour and no chill filtration, the
resulting whisky is described as rich
and smooth, delivering layers of
sweetness and depth. Aromas of red
berries, baked apples and honey are
complemented by gentle spice on the
nose, while the palate reveals a creamy
mouthfeel with notes of ripe berries and
nuttiness, followed by a softly spiced,
oaky finish.
Lochlea remains one of only two Scotch
whisky distilleries to grow its own
barley on-site, with every stage of
production handled at the Ayrshire
distillery — from cultivation through to
cask filling. This complete oversight of
the production process contributes to
the consistency, provenance and
distinctive character found across its
range.
Darren McCormick, Lochlea's distillery
manager said: "Our latest Red Wine Cask
expression deepens our signature style
with this type of cask, building on the
2025 release that was finished in
Grenache casks from the south of France.
We want to set the tone for our future
releases in the series, whilst
reinforcing our commitment to flavour
exploration and creating limited edition
whiskies that perfectly complement our
core range."
Balancing sweetness, spice and fruit-led
richness, the second Red Wine Cask
release further strengthens Lochlea's
expanding portfolio and offers whisky
drinkers a distinctive yet accessible
limited-edition expression.
