Lochlea
unveils Cask Strength Batch 2, which
features more age as well as a unique
cask composition: 60% Pedro Xímenez (PX),
28% Oloroso sherry butts, and 12% STR
barriques.
 Lochlea
Distillery in Ayrshire is set to unveil
its second cask strength whisky on June
10th, just in time for Father’s Day.
Lochlea tells me that this release
offers a bold version of the
distillery’s acclaimed single malt
whisky, and is perfect for enthusiasts
seeking a more robust dram.
Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 2 follows on
from the success of last year’s
inaugural cask strength release,
designed to showcase the Lochlea house
spirit at a higher ABV. This year's
batch not only has more age but also
features a unique cask composition: 60%
Pedro Xímenez (PX), 28% Oloroso sherry
butts, and 12% STR barriques. The
distillery tells me that these diverse
cask profiles have imparted a richer,
peppery European Oak finish to the
whisky.
Each cask type in the mix has
contributed its own distinct
characteristics to the final blend:
Oloroso sherry butts add a creamy, dry,
fruity note; STR barriques introduce
spice and depth; and PX casks provide a
sweet, musty complexity.
Bottled at 60% ABV, this limited edition
whisky is among the oldest from Lochlea
to date, predominantly featuring five
year old spirit with a small portion of
four year old whisky. They tell me that
the inclusion of the five year old
spirit has enhanced the overall
complexity of the whisky.
John Campbell, Lochlea’s Production
Director said: 2Last year's Cask
Strength exceeded expectations for a 4
year old, setting a high standard. With
Batch 2 this year, we've once again
surpassed expectations. This whisky
packs a punch, showcasing a complexity
greater than the sum of its parts.
"Cask Strength Batch 1 had lovely layers
of fresh, tropical fruit. Batch 2 has
less of the signature Lochlea green
apple dominance, but will have more
weight to it, with a floral, lively
palate and peppery European Oak finish.
Batch 2 will feel bigger and bolder than
Batch 1, making it an interesting dram
to explore."
Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 2 will be
