In 1816 local farmer and distiller John Johnston founded the first legal distillery at Lagavulin. A year later Archibald Campbell founded a second distillery. After Johnston's death the two distilleries were united, when Glasgow-based Islay malt merchant Alexander Graham, to whom Johnston had been in debt, acquired Lagavulin. Graham improved the buildings and his successors, James Logan Mackie & Co., carried on the business successfully. When owner Peter Mackie died the distillery came under the control of the White Horse Distillers, which was bought by DCL before becoming part of UDV.

Today's Lagavulin malt whisky has won numerous awards, including nine Gold Medals at the International Wine and Spirit Competitions. Its awesome power and marvellous complexity of flavours are enjoyed by many malt lovers throughout the world.

The Lagavulin 16 Year Old is widely considered the best of the Islay malts by many connoisseurs because of its balance. A bit of iodine, a bit of smoke, moderately peaty and it has the smoothest of finishes. Lagavulin is part of UDV's famous Classic Malts Collection.
