Review of the
new limited edition Kilchoman Sanaig
Cask Strength.
With the dark, colder months now upon us I am sure
more than a few of you would
appreciate a winter warmer, well
Kilchoman has just the thing for you,
they have just released a
limited-edition cask-strength version of
Sanaig as their final global release of
2024. Building on the popularity of the
Kilchoman Machir Bay Cask Strength, they
wanted to offer everyone the chance to
experience Sanaig at its fullest,
natural intensity.
The Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength
release follows the same recipe as the
standard Sanaig bottling, but instead of
lowering the strength to 46% ABV,
they've bottled this edition at a robust,
and having now tasted it I can say even
more flavoursome
57.8% ABV.
Sanaig combines Oloroso sherry hogshead
finishes with fully sherry-matured
casks, all sourced from the renowned
Bodega José y Miguel Martin. This higher
strength highlights the consistency and
depth of the sherry casks, bringing out
an impressive harmony of rich sweet peat smoke
and sweet, cooked fruit flavours,
finishing with a deep, long-lasting,
almost glutinous character.
Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder
commented: "Ever since we first launched
Machir Bay at cask strength, followers
of Kilchoman have been crying out for
Sanaig to be bottled at the same high
strength. The wait is over and it
certainly packs a punch! Rich dark
fruits coat the palate and a long
lasting finish of sweetness and spice
make sure this smoky dram stays with you
long after you’ve finished."
I was actually lucky enough to taste a
Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength sample as part of a
Kilchoman Fèis Ìle 2021 DNA tasting and I
can tell you it was an outstanding dram
and I for one am pleased that they have
announced the addition of a Kilchoman
Sanaig Cask Strength albeit as a limited
edition
and having now tasted the new limited
release I
can say it is an absolutely outstanding Oloroso
sherry influenced Kilchoman, you can
read my thoughts on it below.

|
Bottled at 57.8% ABV.
Producer's
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Sugar
sweet toffee infused with enticing peat smoke
and a sherry soaked
raisin and sultana fruitiness, this is joined
by a gentle mix of orange and honey
lurking in the background.
Taste: Vanilla toffee
infused with deliciously sweet sherried peat
leads the charge. The peat
then develops a slightly more earthy edge
accompanied by some raisin, sultana and
a little orange and lemon citrus. A
touch of pepper and just a wee touch of
dark chocolate bitterness sneaks in to balance the sweetness.
A late touch of cinnamon.
Finish: A deliciously
sherry rich, long, sweet peaty finish
which simply
echoes the palate, the raisin and
sultana is more sugared now, the orange
and lemon citrus is hanging in there
also, the cinnamon is now a wee bit more
pronounced, a wee touch of coffee with
hint of a liquorice edge now but it is the sweet peat
that stays to the end.
Comment:
In this case cask strength means more
strength, more flavour and more
pleasure! This has a really delicious
Kilchoman peat infused Oloroso sherry
influence. I was lucky enough to have
the chance to taste Kilchoman Sanaig at
Cask Strength during the Fèis Ìle 2021
and this is even better than I recall.
If you are looking for a quality
sherried, peaty dram to warm you up over
the cold winter months or for something
special to drink over the Christmas
holidays then you wont find much better
than this.
