Kilchoman Port Cask Matured 2024 Review

11th October 2024
Review of the 3rd fully Port Cask Matured single malt release from Kilchoman and it is another stunning port cask matured Kilchoman with yet again a perfect, absolutely delicious, balanced mix of Kilchoman's ashy peat smoke and the fruit and toffee contributed by the port casks, from nose to long finish.

Kilchoman Port Cask Matured 2024 EditionKilchoman Port Cask Matured 2024 Edition is the 3rd Port Cask matured whisky from the Islay farm distillery and given the quality of the first release back in 2014 then followed by the equally outstanding 2018 release, I have very high hopes for this one.

Their first release in 2014, was matured for three years in fresh port casks. The second edition, released in 2018, was a combination of three and four year old casks. This latest edition, Kilchoman Port Cask Matured 2024 Edition, was matured in refill casks for a minimum of six years.

Unlike most port releases from other distilleries, this is not a port cask finish, the whisky has only been matured in port hogsheads. Whilst being more challenging to get right, Kilchoman’s full term maturation approach is something Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder, is committed to continuing.

Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder commented: "When we started Kilchoman, we always wanted to do things slightly differently, some distilleries do release full maturation bottling's, but most tend to do finishes. Full term maturation is fun because you don’t always know how it’s going to work out. We’re fortunate that the Kilchoman spirit character lends itself to bind together with experimental casks very nicely.

"The time spent in port casks has added layers of red berries and smoked meats to the natural maritime peat smoke and citrus sweetness of the Kilchoman spirit."

The Kilchoman Port Cask Matured 2024 Edition is non chill-filtered and natural colour and a peating level of 50PPM the Kilchoman Port Cask Matured 2018 has been bottled at 50.% ABV and will be available from specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt while stocks last.

Bottled at 50% ABV.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: An enticing nose with some creamy vanilla toffee, sweet raisin, plum and a touch of lemon citrus all interlaced with some delicious sweet ashy Kilchoman smoke, a gentle touch of pepper and a touch of spice.

Taste: A deliciously rich raisin and a mild damson (plum) jam sweetness infused with equally delicious sweet peat smoke, creamy vanilla toffee, a wee bit of spice, a bit of sea-salt.

Finish: Long, the vanilla toffee bows out first, the delicious port cask fruit which has got a wee bit more of a lemon citrus edge now continues to tussle it out with the sweet Kilchoman peat long into the finish.

Comment: Another stunning port cask matured Kilchoman with yet again a perfect, absolutely delicious, balanced mix of Kilchoman's ashy peat smoke and the fruit and toffee contributed by the port casks, from nose to long finish. If you are a peated whisky fan bare in mind that these Kilchoman Port Cask Matured releases don't come around that often so grab this one while you can as you wont find better than this with a port cask influence.
