Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured Review

28th February 2022
Kilchoman unveils their first limited release of 2022, a heavily peated single malt which was fully matured in Madeira hogsheads casks for 5 years and 3 months.

Kilchoman Madeira Cask MaturedKilchoman has unveiled their first limited edition release of the year, Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured.

Kilchoman tells me that this was initially scheduled to be released in late 2021 however a bottle shortage meant that it was delayed. But, from Wednesday 2nd March, the wait will be over and the new Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured will be available around the world.

Fans of the family owned and run Islay farm distillery will recall that they released their first Kilchoman limited edition Madeira Cask Matured single malt back in 2015 which was outstanding but sadly there hasn't been another fully Madeira Cask Matured single malt since then, well that is until now.

This new Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured was distilled in May 2016, heavily peated at 50PPM, it was fully matured for 5 years and 3 months in 46 fresh Madeira hogsheads casks, before being bottled at what should be a rather flavoursome 50% ABV. Those 46 Madeira hogsheads casks produced a total 17,000 bottles.

Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder commented on Kilchoman's first new release of 2022, saying: "Kilchoman really lends itself to maturation in fortified wine casks. The rich fruity character of the casks balances nicely with the creamy citrus sweetness of our new spirit. My preference when using wine casks has always been to use fresh first fill barrels with a view to bottling the whisky relatively young. This approach means the lighter clean flavours and fresh maritime peat smoke aren’t overwhelmed by the cask influence."

The Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured will be available from Wednesday 2nd March from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Amazon and Master of Malt

Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured Review

Review added 8th March 2022:

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet creamy vanilla and caramel infused with enticing peat smoke and a little candied orange & lemon citrus, a touch of damson jam adds to the luscious balance.

Taste: A delicious mix of sweet peat and ripe fruit syrup leads the charge, quickly supported by some creamy vanilla, pepper and gentle warm oak spices. Gentle orange and lemon citrus adds to its depth.

Finish: A lovely long finish, Kilchoman's peat smoke imparted with the sugars from the sweet Madeira casks, dark fruits and gentle citrus zest cling to the palate for an age before bowing out to leave some lingering peppery oak spices.

Comment: An absolutely delicious, moreish, smooth, sweet peaty dram with a lovely wee fruity edge, another stunning quality, very drammable whisky from the folks at Kilchoman. Highly recommended! if you enjoy a sweet peaty dram!

SMW Score 94/100
