Kilchoman Whisky & Chocolate Pairing

3rd February 2021
Are you looking for a Valentines gift for a whisky lover then look no further as Kilchoman has paired its iconic core range peaty whiskies with some delicious unique Scottish chocolate from Edinburgh based COCO Chocolatier.

Throughout 2020 Kilchoman hosted various online live whisky tastings where people from around the world had the opportunity to order tasting packs so they could get the full tasting experience from the comfort of their own home. The live events ranged from tasting through their core range of award winning whiskies, to rare limited editions and pre-release samples.

Kilchoman then offered something slightly different with their online tastings and paired the core range whiskies with a variety of fantastic foods from other Scottish producers. Participants were able to order the food tasting packs as well as the whiskies to get the full tasting experience. From highland venison to island cheese and west coast seafood, these tastings proved to be popular with both whisky beginners and connoisseurs alike. The final food pairing had a slightly more international feel through a collaboration with Edinburgh based company COCO chocolatier who work with cacao farmers across Colombia.

Following on from the success of this, Kilchoman are now offering whisky fans two of the chocolate varieties in Kilchoman branded packaging to pair with two of their core range expressions which I am sure many of you are already very familiar with Machir Bay and Sanaig.

Kilchoman have paired their Machir Bay whisky with the Atlantic sea salt and lime milk chocolate and they have paired their Sanaig with something very unique - a haggis flavoured dark chocolate.

Sanaig is matured in a high proportion of Oloroso sherry hogsheads which imparts a balance of rich, dried fruits and peat smoke. Kilchoman have paired Sanaig with something very unique - a haggis flavoured dark chocolate.

With Valentines Day just around the corner you will find both the Kilchoman branded COCO Haggis Spice Dark Chocolate and the COCO Atlantic Sea Salt & Lime Milk Chocolate available from the Kilchoman website shop along with their range of single malts including a 20cl gift pack of the Sanaig and Machir Bay which they have paired with the chocolate.

You will also find the current range of Kilchoman single malts available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt

Kilchoman Sanaig Review

Kilchoman Sanaig paired with COCO Haggis Spice Dark Chocolate.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  Enticing peated toffee, some pineapple and grapefruit.

Taste: Vanilla toffee coated in deliciously sweet mildly sherried peat. The peat becomes more earthy, a little lemon and raisin. A touch of pepper and just a wee touch of bitterness sneaking in to balance the sweetness.

Finish: Long, still a touch of lemon and raisin, the mildly sherried peat becomes more ashy and a little drying as it slowly fades.

Paired With COCO Chocolate: The ingredients for a good Islay dram is to serve it peated, serve it young, add some Oloroso casks to the mix, bottle it at a decent strength, Sanaig has all these. The addition of quality dark chocolate to a quality, lightly sherried, peaty dram like Sanaig is always going to be a very enjoyable experience but this COCO Dark Chocolate also brings some lovely light spicy haggis notes to the experience which makes for a very enjoyable dramming session.

SMW Score 90/100
(with the addition of the COCO Dark chocolate and spice - DELICIOUS!)

Kilchoman Machir Bay Review

Kilchoman Machir Bay paired with COCO Atlantic Sea Salt & Lime Milk Chocolate.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  Gentle earthy peat smoke and lemon citrus infused vanilla, some distant grapefruit.

Taste: Intensifying ashy peat smoke and oak sugars, honeyed vanilla infused with lemon and a touch of sultana and grapefruit.

Finish: The delicious sugars from the oak, vanilla and mouth coating peat smoke clings to the palate for an age, a little touch of pepper, a gentle lemon and sultana fruitiness hangs around a while before letting the peat take the final bow.

Paired With COCO Chocolate: The delicious fresh lime flavour and the sweetness from the milk chocolate balances very well with the lemon citrus vanilla character of the Machir Bay making for a deliciously moreish dramming combination.

On a side note I found the COCO Atlantic Sea Salt & Lime Milk Chocolate delicious on its own, the lime reminded me of the lime you used to find in the discontinued Fry's Five Centres chocolate which I used to love although on this occasion with milk chocolate. If you are reading this COCO Chocolatier, is there any chance of a Lime Dark choccolate.

The COCO Atlantic Sea Salt & Lime Milk Chocolate and Kilchoman Machir Bay are outstanding individually together they are an absolute delight.

SMW Score 92/100
(Absolutely Delicious with the addition of the lime flavoured COCO chocolate)
