Kilchoman 13 Year Old Review

5th March 2025
Kilchoman has released a limited edition 13 Year Old which has been matured in a mix of bourbon barrels, octaves, and Calvados casks resulting in an absolutely delicious apple cider infused sweet peaty Kilchoman dram.

Kilchoman 13 Year OldBuilding on the success of its landmark Kilchoman 16 Year Old limited edition release in 2023, the Islay farm distillery has unveiled another limited-edition age statement whisky—the Kilchoman 13 Year Old.

Matured for 13 years in a mix of bourbon barrels, octaves, and Calvados casks, this latest release offers a rich profile bursting with juicy fresh fruits, intense sweetness, and Kilchoman's signature waves of Islay’s maritime peat smoke.

Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder, commented on this latest age statement release saying: "After the overwhelming response to our 16 Year Old, I’m excited to announce the release of another age statement Kilchoman – The 13 Year Old. The ex-bourbon casks make up the large part of the vatting, lending that unmistakable Kilchoman character, while the addition of calvados casks, which may surprise a few people, infuses vibrant green apple and fresh fruit notes into the mix.

"Although our older stocks remain limited, we’re excited to share a variety of aged Kilchoman expressions with you over the next few years.”

The Kilchoman 13 Year Old is non-chill filtered, naturally coloured and has been bottled at 50% ABV, it is now available in the UK and across Europe, with a price range of £85 to £90 you will find it available f

Kilchoman 13 Years Old Review

Bottled at 50% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Apple and a wee hint of pear, a touch of honey and lemon lurks in the background, all of which is infused with a enticing gentle sweet peat smoke.

Taste: Delicious sweet sugared peat with a vanilla edge leads closely followed by a touch of butterscotch and lemon zest, some lovely mildly spiced apple and pear and a late touch of oak.

Finish: A lovely long finish, the apple and pear hang on for an age before bowing out to let the sweet peat, lemon zest and lovely oak spice have the final word. Even spicier after a couple of mouthfuls.

Comment: Think of a sweet apple cider infused Bourbon cask Kilchoman with added oak spice. The balance between Bourbon casks and Calvados casks combined with its 13 years of maturity has made for another absolutely delicious, moreish dram from Anthony Wills and the team at Kilchoman. I got the chance to taste an experimental Kilchoman single Calvados cask matured whisky during Fèis Ìle 2021 which I said at the time was good but needed more time in the cask. If this is from the same cask, it has certainly come of age and the ratio of the mix with the Bourbon casks has made for an absolutely delicious apple cider infused sweet peaty Kilchoman dram. I highly recommend this one if you enjoy some apple with your peat, delicious!
