Jura Rum Cask Finish Review

16th April 2021
Introducing the new Jura Rum Cask Finish, an easy drinker with a delicious rum cask influence for those long warm summer evenings and at a fantastic price.

Jura Rum Cask Finish FinishJura Rum Cask Finish is the third release in a new cask finish series from the island distillery.

A no age statement whisky which was initially matured in American White Oak Ex Bourbon barrels, the spirit was then finished in hand selected Caribbean Rum Casks to create a smooth, creamy and fruity whisky.

Gregg Glass, Whisky Maker & Blender at Whyte & Mackay the parent company of the Isle of Jura distillery, commented: "Our Jura Cask Editions have been created to showcase cask types in partnership with the Jura distillery character. The flavours offer interesting interpretations of our classic style, making them ideal for those looking to explore new flavours and finishes. With Jura Rum Cask Finish, the taste experience has been enhanced through the finish to create a beautifully tropical and fruity result. In making this release, we wanted to share a Single Malt thatís easy drinking and great value with compelling character!"

To emphasise the fruity flavours of the Rum Cask Finish release, Jura are recommending to try it alongside a serve of grilled or glazed pineapple or enjoy alongside a traditional Caribbean dish such as Jerk Chicken. It is also encouraged to explore the dimensions of flavour in a sharing fruit punch or in a classic ginger beer long serve, swapping rum for 50ml of Jura Rum Cask Finish.

Presented in a 1 litre bottle and bottled at 40% ABV the Jura Rum Cask Finish will initially be exclusively available from Tesco supermarkets and I am told may also be available in Sainsbury's in the future, after tasting this (note below) I am happy to recommend it as a easy drinking summer drammer and great value at £40 for a one litre bottle.

I have long considered Jura as a distillery that turns out some quality older whiskies but Jura really has been turning out some quite impressive young whiskies in recent times that are good to drink and more importantly priced to drink, I wish there was more whisky makers in Scotland like it. If you want to explore Jura's older and younger whiskies you will find the current Jura whisky range available from specialist online whisky retailers  such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

Jura Rum Cask Finish Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Some sweet creamy toffee and a gentle exotic fruity mix of orange, lemon, peach and pineapple, a sprinkling of brown sugar. A little milk chocolate, coconut and some distant marzipan and a touch of oak.

Taste: The delivery brings sweet vanilla toffee infused with the exotic fruits from the nose - pineapple, peach and a touch of zesty lemon. Some drying sweet oak with a light dusting of spice.

Finish:: A medium to long finish, vanilla, fruit and a little sweet barley sugar, some delicate spice and lingering slightly drying oak.

Comment: A very gentle but busy and very agreeable nose lets you know what is to come, simply a delicious very enjoyable easy to drink unpeated Jura single malt with a lovely gentle rum cask influence. The rum doesn't overwhelm the whisky as some finishes can but gives the whisky a gentle toffee sweetness and exotic fruitiness. If this is the replacement of the equally drammable Jura Winter Edition on the shelves in Tesco stores it could have easily been named the Jura Summer Edition.

An easy drinker for those long warm summer evenings and here is hoping we get a few of those this year with most of us including myself having a staycation this summer. Like the the Winter Edition the Jura Rum Cask Finish is presented in a 1 litre bottle and at £40 a bottle it is fantastic value and you can simply pick it up in the supermarket, no postage costs.

SMW Score 86/100
