Whisky Focus - Jura 18 Year Old Review

Jura 18 Year Old Review

8th October 2021
Review of the Jura 18 Year Old, matured in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and finish in Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux red wine barriques.

Jura 18 Year OldThis Jura 18 Year Old expression launched back in 2018 when the Isle of Jura distillery boldly launched a complete new core range.

Matured for eighteen years in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels with a finish in Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux red wine barriques from the South of France, it is bottled at 44% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Some sweet toffee and very gentle honey infused with a lovely enticing fruitiness - apricot, raisin, cherry and orange. A distant whiff of smoke, a subtle tinge of liquorice and some light oak spice.

Taste: The juicy fruits from the nose arrive with an initial sugar boost giving the fruit a slightly candied feel, they are joined by some almond, pepper, a wee touch of ginger, some late milk chocolate and there is some subtle Jura peat smoke always in the background.

Finish: A lovely long finish, the fruit fades out, the sugars hang on for an age before letting the slightly drying oak spices, subtle Jura smoke, a touch of pepper and tinge of liquorice have the final say.

Comment: Undoubtedly Jura, with very subtle Jura peat smoke present from nose to finish, it is a wee bit shy on the nose but the juicy palate and long finish more than makes up for it, the 44% ABV bottling strength simply adds to the flavour pleasure and when picked up for £59 a bottle this is amongst one of the best value for money core range 18 year olds around.

SMW Score 90/100

Jura 18 Year Old has a RRP of £75 but can often be found on offer for around £59 which is a great price for this dram of this age and quality, you will find it available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Amazon and Master of Malt
