Highland Park
launch the Viking Legend Series with
Valkyrie
Highland Park have just announced the
release of Highland Park Valkyrie, the
first of a trio of limited edition
releases in their new Highland Park
Viking Legend Series.
What makes this first release in the
series attractive to me and I am sure
many of you Highland Park fans out
there, is that Highland Park Master
Whisky Maker, Gordon Motion, says that
he has dialled up more smoky notes in
the new Highland Park Valkyrie by
incorporating more of their heathery
peated malt. Gordon says that this has
created "a richer, fuller phenolic note
that has balance due to the sweeter,
heathery character of the Highland Park
moorland peat, which is a slight
departure from their core 12 Year Old
whisky".
The other notable thing which I am sure
will make the new Highland Park Valkyrie
attractive to you is that it is natural
colour, bottled at
45.9% ABV and it has a palatable price
tag of £55 for a 70cl/75cl bottle
depending on where in the world you are.
In the creation of the new Highland Park Viking Series the
distillery has once again looked back on
its Orkney Island homes Viking ancestry
and they have teamed up with
renowned Danish designer Jim Lyngvild, a
modern day Viking and expert in Norse
mythology, to design striking new
packaging for the Viking Legend Series.
Valkyrie is the first in a series of
three Viking Legend releases which have
all been inspired by rich Viking history
and mythology. Valkyrie will be followed
by Highland Park Valknut in 2018 and
Highland Park Valhalla in 2019.
Valkyrie’s unique one-off design is
inspired by two important Nordic sources
– a typical Viking pendant from around
300-700AD discovered in Uppland, Sweden
and the ancient Hammar Stone of Gotland
which details the epic journey of the
Valkyries,
In his distinctive style, Lyngvild has
interpreted the ancient legend of the
Valkyries – avenging horse-backed angels
who combed the battlefields for the
bravest of their fallen warriors – in an
expressive, story-telling illustration
for Highland Park.
Highland Park also has a new whisky in
the pipeline for the US market which is
set to be launched this summer 2017,
named Highland Park Magnus, it was
matured in a combination of sherry
seasoned and American ex-Bourbon oak
casks and it will be bottled at 40% ABV
with a price tag of US $39.99.
As I said the new Highland Park Valkyrie
has a palatable price tag of £55, I
haven't had the chance to taste it yet
but the official tasting note is below
and I will update you with my thoughts
as soon as I taste it.
Highland Park Valkyrie will launch this month in over 15
markets including the UK, USA, Canada,
Denmark, Germany and will be available from
specialist online whisky retailers such
as
Master of
Malt

Highland Park Valkyrie Review
|
Producer's Tasting Notes:
Colour: Natural colour - bright, amber hue.
Nose: Sharp tang of sweet green apples and ripening lemons.
Taste: A bewitching mix of oriental spices. Driven by
European Oak sherry seasoned casks,
American Oak sherry-seasoned casks and
Bourbon casks, the flavour profile is
creamy vanilla with spicy, sweet,
preserved ginger and lingering smokiness
with hints of liquorice.
Finish: Exquisitely balanced, the long and lingering finish
delivers waves of warm aromatic smoke
and richly ripened fruit.
