Review of
Highland Park The Light 17 Year Old.
 Highland
Park The Light 17 Year Old is the second
release in a two part series from the
Orkney distillery which have been
bottled to celebrate the contrasting
seasons on Orkney.
The Light is a release of 28,000 bottles
which have been bottled to celebrate the
spring and summer months on Orkney, it
was matured in 100% refill American oak
casks and bottled at 52.9% ABV, for my
thoughts on it see my review below.
The Light follows the
The Dark which was
released earlier this year and was
bottled to celebrate the autumn and
winter months on Orkney, it was matured in sherry seasoned European oak
casks.
Both bottles in the two part series are
releases of 28,000 bottles that have
both been bottled at the same strength
and at the same age, the only difference
is the type of casks each expression
matured in so not only do they tell the
story of the contrasting seasons on
Orkney, they also demonstrate the
influence the type of oak used to mature
a whisky has on the final whisky.
Presented in a green glass bottle,
although the glass is not as green as
the image would have you believe. The
bottle and packaging are embossed with a
serpent dragon design which takes its
inspiration from the great Norse sagas
and reflects Orkney's Norse and Viking
ancestry.

has a retail recommend price of £190 and

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose: An enticingly light, sweet
fruitiness, green apples and ripe pear,
a little peach and some orange. A touch
of vanilla and honey, just the very
slightest whiff of smoke hiding in the
background.
Taste: A juicy tropical summer fruitiness leads with peach and plum, a
little mango and watermelon there also.
A little vanilla, a lovely touch of
pepper and honey.
Finish: Creamy vanilla and honey. Some peach and apple which
fades first leaving some lingering oak
spice and a little nuttiness. Just the
vaguest hint of heathery honeyed smoke.
Comment: Becomes a little more spicier on the palate after a
few mouthfuls, which subdues the
delicious tropical fruitiness a little
but the vibrant spices are equally
delicious. Undoubtedly a lovely fruity
summer dram but with a vibrant spicy
twist. The Light is very much a non-sherried
expression of the first expression in
this two part series, Highland Park The
Dark which was released last winter.
