Haig Club Clubman Review

9th August 2016

Haig Club expand their range with the launch of Haig Club Clubman.

David Beckham drinking the new Haig Club Clubman

Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky have added a new expression to their core whisky range which I am sure you will all know by now is the chosen dram of global icon David Beckham and British entrepreneur Simon Fuller.

Haig Club Clubman is the new expression, a single grain whisky produced at the Cameronbridge Grain Whisky Distillery. Haig tell me that Clubman has inherited the same bold and progressive spirit as Haig Club - designed to be different, stylish and modern whilst incorporating the House of Haig’s almost 400 year heritage. The inspiration for the name can be found in advertising materials dating back to the 1920s, in which Haig was advertised as "The Clubman’s Whisky".

Matured exclusively in American Oak casks that have previously held Bourbon and bottled at 40% ABV, Haig Club Clubman is presented in a distinctive blue glass square decanter style bottle, it is a permanent addition to the Haig Club range and launches in the UK this month with a recommended retail price of £25, launches in further markets are subject of future announcements.

Brand partners David Beckham and Simon Fuller are delighted that consumer response to the award-winning Haig Club brand means that Diageo is now able to launch Haig Club Clubman.

Beckham commented: "Working closely with Diageo, we look forward to welcoming Clubman into the Haig Club family. From its earliest days, Scotch Whisky has attracted people from all over the world with its sophistication, style and distinctive array of flavours. We want to continue in this spirit, bringing to market a special new whisky and introducing new fans to this incredible industry."

You will find the current Haig Club whisky range available from specialist whisky shops worldwide such as The Whisky Exchange

Haig Club Clubman Review

Haig Club Clubman review.William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A gentle Kentucky Bourbon character with a lovely balance of mild coconut sweetness and creamy vanilla toffee.

Taste:  The delivery brings the sweet coconut and vanilla toffee from the nose all between layers of lovely mild fizzy oak spices. Just a touch of honey and orange citrus in the background

Finish: A longish length finish. The vanilla sweetness and oak spice slowly fade leaving a touch of citrusy orange and a little pepper. Mildly drying.

Comment: Single grain whisky really is the sleeping gentle giant of Scotch whisky and it is good to see Diageo trying to awaken this giant.

The new Clubman really is an ultra smooth and very easy to drink whisky full of the subtle single grain character you would expect.

Perfect for anyone new to whisky and at the same time a great dramming whisky for us old hands and sensibly priced at £25 a bottle and I am sure we will see it on offer at certain times of year.

Clubman has just the slightest hint of young spirit but that can be overlooked at this price, I suspect this easy drinking single grain will be popular.

SMW Single Grain Whisky Score 88/100

William Morrison's Haig Club Clubman & Coke Zero Tasting Notes:

I don't normally add anything to my whisky but as the new Haig Club Clubman is also recommended to have with cola I thought I would give it a go with some Coke Zero and add my thoughts.

I poured my self a 50ml/50ml mix of Clubman and ice cold Coke Zero and added a slice of lemon. I found it very fizzy on the nose at first, only joking. Seriously, this is a deliciously creamy vanilla and caramel drink, have you ever made an ice drink on a warm day with vanilla ice cream and coke, that is what this is except with the added kick of alcohol which really isn't noticeable as this is so creamy smooth.

Straight whisky is not always the ideal drink in certain social situations, so if you like to drink long drinks when you are out on the town then give the vodka and coke (or whatever your tipple is) a swerve next time you are out and get yourself a premium  single grain whisky drink and ask for a Haig Clubman & Coke, it really is delicious.

Just for fun, the first ever SMW Mixed Drink Score 95/100. Refreshingly delicious!
