The Glenturret distillery was founded in
1775 making it the oldest operating
distillery in Scotland today. There are
records of a distillery in the area from
as early as 1717 and some of the
buildings on the present site date from
1775. Glenturret was first known as Hosh
Distillery. Its current name dates back
to 1875.
The distillery closed from 1921 until 1959,
when it was reopened by James Fairlie
who refurbished it. It changed hands a
few more times over the years till
eventually it was in the hands of the
Edrington Group when they took over the
Highland DistillersGroup in 1999.
About 70% of the production at
Glenturret is sold as single malt, the remaining
malt is used in blends like Glenturret Malt Liquor, Fairlie
Liquor and the Famous Grouse.
