Whisky Focus - Glen Scotia Double Cask Review

Glen Scotia Double Cask Review

11th June 2024
Review of Glen Scotia Double Cask which has been finish for 12 months in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks making for a big intense sherried dram.

Glen Scotia Double CaskGlen Scotia Double Cask is the distillery's entry level dram and a great introduction to the Glen Scotia whisky range, it has been matured in first fill American bourbon barrels before being finished for 12 months in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, a rich and spicy dram, as well as distinctly Campbeltown notes.

Bottled non-chill filtered at 46% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Malt and oak merge with a sweet vanilla toffee, honey, red berry and rich dark fruity sherried sweetness, a touch of dark chocolate keeps the sugars in place.

Taste: Burnt toffee sugars with a big sherried fruity edge fills every corner of the mouth, some sweet oak spice adds to the pleasure.

Finish: Long, the intense sherried fruit (apricot, raisin, dates and plum) continues boosted by the sugars but it is then quickly overtaken by the now slightly bittering oak spice which keeps it in place. Ends with drying oak.

Comment: A very promising dram that you could nose all day, and just as I expected on the palate for a young whisky which has spent 12 months in a PX cask, a big intense sherried dram.

SMW Whisky Score 86/100
