The
Glenrothes launch its first ever 40 Year
Old expression.
The Glenrothes has released its
first ever 40 year old expression,
distilled and filled to cask in December
1978 this rare 40 year old was distilled
in copper pot stills which were retired
soon after. The current still-house
continues to produce The Glenrothes
spirit to the same exacting standards;
but this particular Glenrothes 40 Year
Old whisky created in those those long
since retired stills will never exist
again.
For forty years the spirit has been
quietly resting, nurturing and evolving,
the whisky's character has been shaped
by it maturation in a combination of
sherry seasoned and ex bourbon oak
casks. The resulting single malt which
has been bottled at 43% ABV is
described by the distillery as
being "exquisitely resinous and rich in
sweetness with a spicy edge and
naturally deep ruby colour. With
distinctive aromas of orange oil, peach,
cedar wood and almond, The Glenrothes 40
Year Old boasts flavours of sultanas,
cinnamon and nutmeg, finished with spice
and oak tannins".

Glenrothes, said: "Forty years ago The
Glenrothes distillery was different in
many ways, yet our whisky character
remains unchanged. The release of our
new 40 Year Old Single Malt takes us
back in time and celebrates the end of
an era with the closure of the original
still-house. It has been a truly
rewarding experience to incorporate some
of the last remaining spirit from this
time. The very fact that it was created
in a place which no longer produces
whisky highlights the real rarity of
this expression."

release of just 594 individually
numbered bottles and is priced around
£2900 and will be available from specialist online whisky
