Review of the
Glen Moray Twisted Vine Cognac Cask
which has been released just in time for
summer, and Fathers Day if you are
looking for a whisky gift idea, a
cracking cognac rich summer dram with a
lovely French oak influence.
The
creative folks at Glen
Moray distillery have been busy once
again, they have unveiled a new addition
to their core range line-up here in the
UK, the Glen Moray Twisted Vine Cognac
Cask.
The new expression has been fully
matured in in ex-Cognac casks made from
oak grown near Cognac's vineyards in
France. Even today a single malt fully
matured in a Cognac cask is quite rare
to see from any distillery but by their
nature they are an experimental bunch at
Glen Moray hence their extensive core
range and Glen Moray tells me that the
Twisted Vine Cognac Cask is the first of
a new collection from the Speyside
distillery, but they didn't reveal what
the next expression will be or when we
will see it.
As you can see in the image
Twisted Vine Cognac Cask is presented
in bold packaging, Glen Moray’s signature
blue, with a design that features
shimmering golden grapes and the
intricate twisted vines that are
characteristic of France’s Cognac
countryside.
Glen Moray Global Ambassador and Visitor
Centre Manager Iain Allan said: "The
record books show that Glen Moray was
one of the first distilleries in
Scotland to explore the effects of
unusual casks on maturation of our
spirit. This playful, pioneering
approach to flavour is very much part of
what drinkers love about our whiskies
today, and it’s why we are so thrilled
to be unveiling this wonderful new
expression.
"Twisted Vine is matured in Cognac
casks, and all that extra time in such
fruity, flavourful wood has created a
stunning whisky with a rich but
accessible flavour that can be enjoyed
by everyone. It’s perfect neat as a
dram, mixed in a cocktail or as a
special gift for anyone looking to put a
twist on their classic whisky serve".
Glen Moray Twisted Vine Cognac Cask has
been bottled at 40% ABV and has a RRP of
£28, it will be available from High
Street supermarkets such as Asda,
Morrisons and Coop stores as well as
from specialist online whisky
shops such as

Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A sweetish aromatic fruity cocktail of
cognac infused raisin, some cherry and
rose oil, a touch of milk chocolate and
some distant hazelnut.
Taste:
Quite an oily mouthfeel, sweet cognac soaked honeyed raisin and
sultana with the slightest cherry,
almond oil and fresh ground coffee edge,
toasted plain scone and some lovely
vibrant gentle oak spice.
Finish:
A lovely long finish echoing the sweet
fruit, gentle coffee and toasted scone
on the palate which slowly bitters out to
leave the French oak to have the last
word.
Comment:
If you are looking for an affordable,
quality summer dram then grab a bottle
of this, at
£28 a bottle this will be within the
reach of most of us. A cracking cognac
rich summer dram with a lovely French
oak influence! As always my scoring is
based on taste, but if I was to add
marks for price/quality then this would
certainly have a few more marks, but I
could say that about many of Glen
Moray's releases.
