Aged to Impress - A Glen Moray Father's Day Whisky Gift Guide

9th June 2026
If you are looking for a Father's Day whisky gift idea I have reviewed four of Glen Moray's age statement Heritage range, a portfolio that shows just how much variety single malt Scotch can offer, even within a single distillery.

Glen oray Heritage range reviewed - Glen Moray 12, 12 Smoky, 15 and 18 Year Old

Father's Day is the perfect opportunity to treat the whisky-loving dad in your life to something special, and few gifts capture a sense of craftsmanship, heritage and indulgence quite like a bottle of single malt Scotch whisky. While whisky is often associated with luxury, finding a quality dram doesn't have to mean spending a fortune.

Every year, I receive countless requests for Father's Day whisky recommendations, with people searching for a gift that feels thoughtful, offers something a little different and delivers genuine quality without stretching the budget too far. If you're still looking for inspiration, Glen Moray's range of Speyside single malts deserves serious consideration.

Founded in 1897 and nestled in the heart of Speyside, Glen Moray has built a reputation for producing approachable, flavour-packed whiskies that offer exceptional value for money. The distillery's expertise lies not only in the quality of its spirit but also in its long-standing commitment to exploring a diverse range of cask maturations, creating whiskies with character, complexity and remarkable depth.

The Glen Moray Heritage Range perfectly demonstrates why age is about much more than just a number on a label. While an age statement reflects years of careful maturation, it is the interaction between spirit, wood and time that truly shapes a whisky's personality. From vibrant fruit notes and rich vanilla sweetness to layers of spice and oak, each expression tells its own story of patience, craftsmanship and cask influence.

Whether you're buying for a seasoned whisky enthusiast or a dad who simply enjoys a good dram, these four Glen Moray expressions offer something for every palate. Better still, they provide an affordable way to experience the quality and character that have made Glen Moray one of Speyside's most consistently rewarding distilleries.

Glen Moray 12 Year Old Review

Among the standout Father's Day options is the Glen Moray 12 Years Old, a classic Speyside expression matured entirely in American oak casks. It captures the distillery's signature style beautifully, balancing soft vanilla sweetness with bright berried fruit notes for an easy-drinking yet refined dram. At 40% ABV and an RRP of £46.50, it's an ideal introduction to well-matured single malt.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Soft, gently sweet malt sits at the core, lifted by vanilla icing sugar and a delicate citrus brightness. Hints of lemon zest emerge alongside the faintest grassy, almost fresh-cut note in the background.

Taste: Smooth and mouth-coating from the outset, with creamy malt, toffee and vanilla custard leading the way. Subtle oak influence builds underneath, while the citrus from the nose evolves into a light mix of lemon and slightest touch of lime, adding a refreshing lift to the sweetness.

Finish: Long, gradually fading from sweet vanilla and malt into soft, gently drying oak. Clean, balanced and understated, with the sweetness tapering off neatly.

Comment: This is a well-balanced Speyside dram that brings together gentle malt character, soft vanilla sweetness and a whisper of citrus and grassiness. It's easy drinking, approachable and very well judged at its 40% ABV. That said, there's clearly enough structure here to suggest it could shine even further at a higher bottling strength of around 46–50%, where more texture and intensity would likely emerge. Even so, it remains an excellent value, classic Speyside whisky for everyday enjoyment.

Glen Moray 12 Smoky Year Old Review

For dads who enjoy something a little more distinctive, the Glen Moray Smoky 12 adds a subtle peated edge to the familiar Speyside character. Matured in a combination of American oak and bourbon casks, it brings together gentle smoke with layers of vanilla, caramel and soft spice. Bottled at 46.3% ABV and non-chill filtered, it offers added depth and texture while remaining approachable and well balanced. RRP: £52.75

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Creamy vanilla opens the way alongside crisp apple and soft pear, lifted by hints of honey and lemon in the background. Woven through the vanilla and fruit is a gentle, sweet peat smoke with a faint bonfire edge, while a subtle thread of oak spice adds depth and warmth beneath.

Taste: Bright orchard fruits of apple and pear take centre stage, joined by a pleasing sweetness of sugared peat smoke. Creamy vanilla custard smooths the edges, followed by touches of butterscotch and lemon zest. As it develops, a gentle oak spice begins to build, adding structure without overshadowing the fruit and smoke balance.

Finish: Long and lingering, with apple and pear hanging on before slowly giving way to sweet peat smoke, citrus zest and softly drying oak spice. With each sip, the spice gradually builds, adding more presence and definition to the finish.

Comment: A delicious, highly moreish and approachable peated dram that balances gentle smoke with Glen Moray’s signature fruity, creamy spirit. The peat is present but never overpowering, allowing the orchard fruit character and cask influence to shine through. Bottled at a flavoursome 46.3% ABV, it has the depth and texture to elevate the experience further, making this a confident and well-judged addition to the core range. Whether you're new to peat or already a fan, this is a very easy recommendation — a reminder that peated Glen Moray has genuinely come into its own.

Glen Moray 15 Year Old Review

Moving further into richness and complexity, the Glen Moray 15 Years Old combines two contrasting maturations: traditional American oak and Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a whisky built on harmony and contrast, where Glen Moray's fruity core meets the dried fruit, spice and nuttier sweetness of sherry wood. The extra years in cask allow these elements to integrate into a layered, full-flavoured dram at 40% ABV and an RRP of £61.75.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Enticing notes of sweet sherried fruit lead the way, joined by spiced toffee apple and a gentle drizzle of honey. There's a soft richness here that hints at both dried fruit sweetness and warming oak influence.

Taste: Smooth and well-rounded, with layers of toffee and milk chocolate-coated raisins and sultanas. Sweet honey runs through the middle, while gentle oak spice lingers in the background, providing balance and structure without overpowering the fruit-led character.

Finish: Long and gently evolving, with sweet toffee and sherried fruit gradually giving way to a mildly drying, slightly bitter oak spice that adds a clean, measured edge to the fade.

Comment: Exactly what you would expect from a combination of American oak and Oloroso sherry cask maturation — familiar, well-balanced and easy to enjoy. The result is a classic, approachable sherried Speyside dram from Glen Moray that delivers plenty of flavour without ever feeling heavy or overworked. Improved in quality since I last tasted it, which is the very nature of single malt whisky, no two batches will be 100% the same, some very pleasant sherry casks at work with this one and as with the 12 Year old this could be a outstanding dram if bottled at a wee bit higher strength, still a very enjoyable dram as it is.

Glen Moray 18 Year Old Review

At the top of this selection sits the Glen Moray 18 Years Old, matured entirely in first-fill American oak casks. These casks, previously unused for single malt, impart a bold and concentrated character, delivering waves of vanilla, toffee, oak spice and caramelised fruit. Bottled at 47.2% ABV and non-chill filtered, it is a rich, expressive whisky that shows the full impact of extended maturation in quality wood. RRP: £93

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet barley sugar and creamy toffee lead the way, with a gentle undercurrent of fruitcake and soft dried fruit adding depth in the background.

Taste: A vibrant burst of barley sugar sweetness opens the palate, followed by layers of vanilla, zesty orange, lemon and ripe pear. Beneath the fruit and sweetness sits a delicate thread of oak spice, adding balance without overpowering the whisky’s bright, expressive character.

Finish: Long and gently tongue-tingling, with creamy butter toffee and a subtle hint of liquorice. As it fades, lingering gentle oak spice remains, woven together with soft candied fruit sweetness that slowly tapers into a gentle, drying bittersweet edge.

Comment: The influence of first-fill American oak is unmistakable here, amplified by 18 years of maturation and bottled at a flavoursome 47.2% ABV without chill filtration. The result is a richly expressive yet beautifully balanced Speyside dram. A thoroughly enjoyable, mature whisky that delivers both depth and drinkability in equal measure. If your budget can stretch to this dram, it will not disappoint any whisky lover.
