Review of Glen Moray Sauternes Cask the inaugural release from the distillery’s new ‘Warehouse 1 Collection’.

Glen Moray 2006 Sauternes Cask

The Glen Moray Sauternes Cask is a 14 year old cask strength dram which Glen Moray has released just in time for Christmas, it is actually the inaugural release from the distillery’s new ‘Warehouse 1 Collection’.

Distilled in 2006 and fully matured for 14 years in five sweet Sauternes wine casks in the distillery's Warehouse 1, this new expression is exclusive to the UK market and with just 1248 bottles available it wont be around forever.

Glen Moray Sauternes Cask Matured is the first in a new collection of eclectic, small batch releases from Glen Moray, named in honour of Warehouse 1: the Elgin distillery’s blue-fronted dunnage warehouse where an adventurous assortment of interesting and innovative casks are tucked away, quietly maturing for future release.

The Glen Moray Sauternes Cask is bottled at cask strength, 59.6 % ABV, it is naturally coloured, non-chill-filtered and has an RRP of £79.95

Glen Moray’s Head of Whisky Creation Dr Kirstie McCallum said: "We’re very proud to be releasing our Sauternes Cask Matured expression in time for the festive season – and as the first whisky in our new Warehouse 1 Collection. This is an absolute cracker of a dram, and a perfect marriage of Glen Moray’s spirit with all the rich, deliciously sweet flavours you would enjoy in a glass of Sauternes. It’s a real celebration of flavour and Glen Moray’s passion for unusual cask maturation".

Commenting on the new Warehouse 1 Collection, Glen Moray Brand Ambassador Iain Allan added: "There are a good few warehouses at our Elgin site, but Warehouse 1 is special. Over the years, this is where our distillery teams have quietly stored the results of their experiments and cask adventures. As a result we have pockets of casks holding the most interesting and incredible tasting whiskies scattered throughout the warehouse, which we are now uncovering, tasting and making plans to release. It’s fitting and very exciting that, starting with this superb Sauternes bottling, these whiskies will now be enjoyed by drinkers as part of our Warehouse 1 Collection in years to come."

You will find the Glen Moray Sauternes Cask available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt

Glen Moray Sauternes Cask Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Salted toffee, a little dark bitter chocolate, honey and an enticing apricot and sultana fruitiness, just the slightest touch of nuttiness hiding in the background. Hints of overripe banana and a gentle aromatic floral note balances with creamy vanilla.

Taste: A little dark chocolate sauce and salted treacle toffee, Muscovado sugar, honey, melon and vanilla Madeleine's, orange zest, a little ground almond and toasted oak.

Finish: Long, salted toffee, peach, pineapple and spice, waves of drying, spiced toasted oak, coffee and grape slowly fade.

Comment: A deliciously rich Sauternes cask matured, cask strength dram that will warm you on a Christmas night or indeed any winter's night. The spices become more drying with each sip. Cant wait to see what will follow in the  new ‘Warehouse 1 Collection’.
