Review of the
new Glen Moray ‘Smoky Twelve’ – A Peated
Twist on a Speyside Classic which see's
the peated Glen Moray come of age with a
well put together peaty dram.
Glen
Moray is probably not that well known
amongst whisky drinkers for their peated
whiskies, I
believe the Glen Moray distillery
started distilling peated spirit way back in
2010, I first tasted Glen Moray Peated
"spirit" back in 2012 before it reached
the age to officially be called whisky,
it was cask strength, around 2 years
old, it was very impressive and a great
indicator of things to come from the
innovatively creative Speyside distillery.
The distillery launched the Glen Moray
Classic Peated bottled at 40% ABV in
2015 which was all about subtle peat,
light spice and and creamy vanilla, and
a very enjoyable lightly peated Speyside
dram.
There was also an absolutely delicious
Peated Rioja Cask Finish released just last
summer as part of their limited edition
Warehouse 1 collection and I am pleased to
say that Glen
Moray is now inviting whisky lovers to
discover a bold new side of its classic
Speyside single malt with the recent launch of
the Glen Moray 12 Year Old Smoky—a
distinctive new permanent addition to Glen Moray’s
award-winning core range.
The Glen Moray 12 Year Old Smoky
is crafted using peated barley 50ppm, adding a
gentle layer of sweet bonfire smoke to
the distillery’s famously approachable
spirit. Produced at the historic Elgin
distillery using traditional methods,
this release continues Glen Moray’s
legacy of flavour exploration.
Matured in a dual-cask combination of
American and European oak, from which the whisky
has gained added depth and complexity:
- American oak
in the form of ex-Bourbon casks,
these casks make up approximately
75% of the mix, these casks lend soft notes of vanilla,
caramel, and a smooth bourbon warmth.
- European oak
a creative combination of red wine,
port and a small amount of Madeira
European oak casks, approximately
25% of the mix which
enhances the dram with tannins,
fruit, peppery spice, and more
pronounced vanilla character.
The result is a
beautifully balanced whisky that blends
Glen Moray’s light, easy-drinking
profile with the richness of peated malt
which now weighs in at 20ppm after
distillation and maturation and the complexity of the double-cask
maturation has resulted in a smooth Speyside dram with
a smoky twist.
The ‘Smoky Twelve’ offers a compelling
combination for both peat enthusiasts
and fans of Glen Moray’s signature
smooth, fruity style. Arriving just in
time for Father’s Day, it’s an ideal
gift for whisky-loving dads seeking
something a little different.
The Glen Moray 12 Year Old Smoky has
been bottled at flavoursome 46.3% ABV, it is
naturally coloured and non
chill-filtered and has a RRP of £49.99
and will be available from specialist online whisky
shops such as

Tasting Notes:
Nose: Creamy
vanilla, apple and a wee hint of pear, a
touch of honey and lemon lurks in the
background, all infused with lovely
sweet peat smoke with the slightest
bonfire edge, there is a wee touch of
oak spice lurking in the background
also.
Taste: A
delicious, slightly candied, apple and
pear mix is matched by equally delicious
sweet sugared peat with a creamy vanilla
custard edge, followed by a wee touch of
butterscotch and lemon zest, a lovely
late touch of oak spice.
Finish: A
lovely long lingering finish, the apple
and pear hang on for an age before
bowing out to let the sweet peat, lemon
zest and lovely oak spice take the final
bow. The spices build on the finish
after a few mouthfuls.
Comment:
An absolutely delicious, moreish, easy
to drink dram with enough peat to
satisfy any diehard peathead, its a
creamy vanilla sweet peat so it lets the
Glen Moray fruit and the fruit from the
European oak casks have a say also. A quality peated
dram and the 46.3% ABV bottling strength
just adds to the depth of the flavour pleasure,
a very well put together peaty dram by
the team at Glen Moray and a
serious rival for any peated
Islay bourbon cask matured whisky and
its great that it is now part of the
Glen Moray core range. Whether you are
an old peathead or new to peat, I highly
recommend it, as peated Glen Moray
whisky has come of age!
