Glenmorangie
unveils its oldest-ever Single Malt
Whisky at 50 Year Old.

Glenmorangie has unveiled its
oldest-ever single malt Scotch whisky,
Glenmorangie 50 Year Old, a remarkably
rare release limited to just 149
numbered bottles, each presented in a
unique handcrafted porcelain vessel.
The new Glenmorangie 50 Year Old single
malt whisky marks an extraordinary
milestone for the Highland distillery,
bringing together liquid distilled in
the mid-1970s with five decades of
careful maturation. Overseen for much of
its life by acclaimed Master Distiller
Dr Bill Lumsden MBE, Glenmorangie 50
Year Old combines the distillery's
characteristic elegance with the depth
and complexity that comes from extended
maturation in bourbon and sherry casks.
The whisky is particularly significant
because its story begins with some of
the last batches of barley malted at
Glenmorangie's own floor maltings before
they were decommissioned in 1977. This
makes Glenmorangie 50 Year Old not only
the oldest whisky ever released by the
distillery, but also a rare taste of an
earlier chapter in Glenmorangie's
history.
Distilled in the distillery's uniquely
tall copper stills, the spirit was laid
down in the mid-1970s to mature in
bourbon hogshead casks and first-fill
Oloroso sherry butts. By the time Dr
Bill Lumsden joined Glenmorangie as
Distillery Manager in 1995, the whisky
had already accumulated considerable
age.
During the early years of his tenure, Dr
Bill identified a small number of casks
with the potential to mature for
considerably longer. In 1999, he
selected a small parcel of the whisky,
comprising predominantly bourbon-cask
matured spirit together with a smaller
proportion from sherry butts.
These were married in a single refill
hogshead, which had been selected to
provide a slow and controlled further
maturation. The tightly coopered cask
was intended to allow the whisky to
continue developing while limiting the
influence of the oak, helping to
preserve the elegant character
associated with Glenmorangie.
The whisky then spent another 25 years
in the refill hogshead. Over that
extended period, it developed greater
depth and complexity while retaining the
distillery's signature style, with the
sherry influence becoming increasingly
integrated into the mature spirit.
After a total of five decades of
maturation, Dr Bill deemed the whisky
ready to be bottled.
Glenmorangie 50 Year Old is non-chill
filtered and bottled at a cask strength
of45.7% ABV. The whisky has a rich dark
mahogany colour and is said to offer an
unusually complex flavour profile, with
sweet notes of baked orange, sultana,
nutmeg and toffee complemented by
herbal, leathery and spicy
characteristics.
Glenmorangie tells me that on the
palate, drinkers can expect a gently
peppery and slightly drying texture
followed by richer flavours of toffee,
stewed Assam tea, birch tar, cinnamon,
clove and oak, while the extended
maturation contributes further layers of
depth. The long, lingering finish brings
notes including aniseed, treacle toffee
and eucalyptus. Subtle hints of smoke
are also present, linked to the barley
used in some of the final batches malted
at Glenmorangie's own floor maltings.
Dr Bill Lumsden said: "The release of
the Glenmorangie 50 Years Old has to be
one of my proudest creations. I often
wondered if the day would ever come that
we’d be able to bottle a Glenmorangie
with such a mighty age statement. The
combination of Glenmorangie from classic
bourbon barrels, with a touch of sweet
yet spicy sherry cask-matured liquid
presents a stunning whisky of depth and
complexity, harmonised with
Glenmorangie’s signature elegance. It’s
also particularly special that this
whisky was created from some of the last
batches of barley to be malted on site
at the distillery in the mid-1970s,
which has added rare hints of smoke to
its flavour profile.
"It has been an honour collaborating
with Peter Pincus to present this
Glenmorangie in such an extraordinary
way. Together we have created an
unrepeatable work of art - and I’d say
it’s been worth the wait."
Glenmorangie 50 Year Old presented as a
work of art
The rarity of the whisky is reflected in
its presentation, with Glenmorangie
collaborating with American ceramic
artist Peter Pincus to create a bespoke
porcelain display vessel for each of the
149 numbered bottles.
Following a visit to the Glenmorangie
distillery and a tasting of the
50-year-old whisky, Peter Pincus, his
partner Laurie and their studio team
spent more than three years developing
and handcrafting the vessels. The
project took approximately 1,000 days
and involved pioneering new ceramic
techniques, with each piece individually
cast, sanded and finished.
Inspired by the flavours and character
of Glenmorangie 50 Years Old, the Pincus
team created a palette of 50 bespoke
colour pigments. These were applied by
hand to produce a unique pattern on
every vessel, ensuring that while each
piece is individually distinctive, all
149 can also be brought together to form
a single tessellated artwork entitled
'Together in Spirit'.
Peter Pincus said: "When we visited
Glenmorangie and tasted this incredible
50-year-old whisky we were inspired with
so many ideas for how to present it. We
have pioneered new techniques that have
never been used in ceramics before and
created a palette of colour to bring the
intense flavour of this whisky to life.
Each of the vessels we have created
links to its neighbours to create a
collective masterpiece, but each also
has its own identity. This project has
been a formative journey of
self-discovery for Pincus, and it’s
wonderful to see our shared vision for
the project come to life."
A 50-year-old Glenmorangie with a rare
history
Glenmorangie's whisky creators have been
refining and redefining the
possibilities of single malt Scotch
whisky for more than 180 years. The
distillery's elegant spirit is distilled
in Scotland's tallest stills and matured
in carefully selected casks, with the
interaction between spirit and oak
playing a central role in the
development of its whisky.
Glenmorangie 50 Years Old takes that
approach to an exceptional age. Its
journey began with whisky distilled in
the 1970s using barley from the
distillery's final years of floor
malting, followed by maturation in
bourbon hogsheads and first-fill Oloroso
sherry butts. The selected whisky was
subsequently married and transferred
into a refill hogshead in 1999 for a
further quarter of a century.
The resulting 50-year-old Highland
single malt Scotch whisky combines the
lighter, elegant character associated
with Glenmorangie with layers of mature
fruit, spice, toffee, tea, leather, oak
and subtle smoke. Its 45.7%
cask-strength bottling and
non-chill-filtered presentation preserve
the whisky in a form intended to
showcase the character developed during
its extraordinary five decades in oak.
At half a century old, this historic
Glenmorangie release represents not only
the oldest whisky ever bottled by the
Highland distillery, but also a liquid
link to the distillery's 1970s heritage
and the final era of its own floor
maltings.
Glenmorangie 50 Year Old carries an RRP
of £25,800 / €30,000and there will be
only 149 numbered bottles available.
The whisky will be available from
September 2026 through the Moët Hennessy
Private Client Team, the Glenmorangie

Tasting Notes:
Nose: Elegant
and curiously aromatic for a whisky of
this age, with hints of amber, cardamon,
sultanas, nutmeg and baked oranges. This
leads to touches of toffee and leather,
with a distinctive herbal top note, like
a whisper of coriander or parsley. At
this age, very little water is needed,
but a few drops will release a candy
sweetness and further toffee notes.
Taste: The
mouthfeel is gently peppery and slightly
drying, followed by bold flavours of
toffee, stewed Assam tea leaves, birch
tar, cinnamon and grape must, along with
a touch of clove and oak tannin. The
oaky, leathery notes continue.
Finish: Long
and lingering, revealing hints of
aniseed, treacle toffee and eucalyptus.
