Glenmorangie The Original 12 Year Old Review

7th October 2024
Review of the new Glenmorangie The Original 12 Year Old which has now replaced the the Original 10 Year Old. The extra 2 years maturation has given the whisky a slightly more bourbon like edge, a touch more oak and gentle spice, still full of Glenmorangie's signature orange citrus and vanilla, every bit as good and more as the 10 year old it replaces.

Glenmorangie Original 12 Year OldIn early July this year Glenmorangie announced that its flagship single malt whisky, the Glenmorangie Original 10 Year Old will now be bottled as a 12 Year Old.

As I have mentioned on here before, the Glenmorangie Original 10 Year Old has long been my go to single malt
to check my palate is in tune before reviewing a new whisky and without hesitation I would have said that it is (or I should say was) one of the best quality and consistently good drams for your money by far. I consider it is a big move for the powers that be at Glenmorangie to decide to let the whisky mature for a further 2 years before bottling it.

When Glenmorangie’s tasting panel began experimenting with The Original they discovered that this smooth single malt gains extra silkiness, sweetness, and complexity when aged for 12 years instead of 10. Thus, Glenmorangie decided to share a reimagined Original to bring more joy to whisky drinkers worldwide. Swirling with creamy vanilla and a rush of citrus, layered with honey and peach, the Original 12 Year Old single malt is said to take The Original 10 Year Old's kaleidoscope of flavours to new heights of deliciousness. Some critics have already responded with delight, awarding it a coveted gold medal at the prestigious World Whiskies Awards 2024.

Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, said: "In 1984 when I was studying in Edinburgh for my PhD, I tasted single malt scotch whisky for the very first time. That whisky was Glenmorangie. I'll never forget my first magical sip and how I became beguiled by its complex range of flavours. During my many years at Glenmorangie, I have always aimed to keep the whisky true to my memory of that first taste. However, recently my team and I started to wonder whether we could reimagine our flagship expression, The Original, for even more deliciousness. The result is The Original 12 Years Old! Smoother, creamier and even more complex, I like to think it "turns up the volume" on our signature whisky’s classic notes of orange, vanilla, peach and honey."

Glenmorangie The Original 12 Year Old is a Highland single malt whisky which has been distilled in the tallest stills in Scotland, it was then matured for a minimum of 12 years in a combination of first fill and refill American ex-bourbon oak casks and it is worth noting that Glenmorangie use casks no more than twice and this shows in the quality of the whisky they produce, unlike many other distilleries who over use casks that in time lend very little to the final whisky.

Still bottled at 40% ABV, The Glenmorangie Original 12 Year Old has a RRP of £40 (look out for offers in the run up to Christmas) you will find it on the shelves of whisky shops, off licenses and supermarkets worldwide, and you will no doubt soon find it available f
rom specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

Bottled at 40% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A little fruity and floral, sweet creamy vanilla interlaced with delicate sweet citrus notes of orange and some distant peach. A little toffee, a hint of honey and some gentle bourbon oak lurk in the background.

Taste: Vanilla with a lovely gentle spiced edge leads along with some lovely orange citrus, a little toasted oak and honey and a wee touch of Demerara sugar sweetened coconut ice. The slightest wee bit of a honeyed edge and late touch of peach and almond.

Finish: Deliciously long, mild barley sugar sweetness interlaced with gentle oak spice, creamy vanilla and orange citrus which all slowly fade out to leave some gentle, slightly drying, lingering honey and almond.

Comment: The extra 2 years maturation has given the whisky a slightly more bourbon like edge, a touch more oak and gentle spice, still full of Glenmorangie's signature orange citrus and vanilla, every bit as good and more as the 10 year old it replaces and without a doubt the new Glenmorangie 12 Year Old will be a my go to whisky now the 10 has gone. Still a top quality whisky for you money.
