Glenlochy was built in 1898 by the Glenlochy - Fort William Distillery Co Ltd,
which was founded by
David McAndie of Nairn. He had hoped to be part of the whisky boom but had left it too late and
unfortunately
opened the distillery during the Pattison crash. Glenlochy only stayed in production until 1919.
Except for a short time during 1925 the
distillery lay silent until 1937. Thomas Rankin, a local
businessman bought the
distillery in 1937 but it was not long before he had sold it onto Train and McIntyre. Train and
McIntyre then transferred it to their subsidiary Associated Scottish Distillers Ltd, who
acquired Bruichladdich, Benromach, Fettercairn, Glenesk, Glenury Royal and Strathdee
distilleries around the same time. In 1953 Train and McIntyre was acquired by DCL. DCL kept
Glenlochy in production until 1983, it was closed due to the rationalisation
programme.
This is one distillery
that will never open again because in 1992 the site was
sold and everything in the distillery
was destroyed. The site was made
into a hotel complex except for the maltings and kilns as they are listed
buildings. There are still a few
independent bottlings around but as time
goes on these will get harder to find.
