Whisky Focus - Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch No. 009

We normally see these big sherried 'Teapot Dram' releases from Glengoyne just before Christmas but we didn't get one last year but the good news is the series is still ongoing and the Highland distiller today unveiled the latest batch in it's most popular limited-edition series, Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch No. 009.

The story behind the Glengoyne Teapot Dram is that it is a nod to the days when the distilleries used to dram their workers, Glengoyne Distillery's tradition of dramming the workers every day stood until the 1970s. The Glengoyne distillery workers would be given three fingers of whisky, three times each day. Many distilleries would only dram the workers with un-matured new make spirit, but not Glengoyne. At Glengoyne, the finest whisky from first fill Oloroso sherry casks was chosen for the distillery workers’ drams. The less seasoned stillmen would, to save face, discreetly pour some of their untouched drams into a copper teapot which sat on the canteen windowsill, ready for their older colleagues.

Honouring this tradition, the Glengoyne Teapot Dram series has remained a deliberately bold, sherry matured limited release ever since its launch. This latest instalment, Batch No. 9, has been matured exclusively in first fill European and American oak sherry casks and bottled at what should be a very flavoursome 58.9% ABV.

Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch No. 009 is a limited release of 3,000 bottles, this highly sought after dram is available from today (22nd May) via the Glengoyne website and distillery shop.

Most likely the reason the release of this next instalment of the Teapot Dram has moved from being a pre-Christmas release to a Spring time release is the distillery has also announced 'The Teapot Tour' at the distillery grounds. Visitors can hear tales from Glengoyne's rich past and taste this newly poured and much sought-after Teapot No.9. Participants will also have the chance to taste two other award-winning whiskies from the Glengoyne Collection.

Available from the Glengoyne Distillery shop, the Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch No. 009 is up £20 on the last release with a RRP of £140. Tickets for the Teapot Tour are £45 and will be available from the the Glengoyne website, although none were available yet at the time of writing this.
