The Glengoyne distillery was founded in 1833 and was originally known as Burn Foot or Glen Guin. It is located in the Highland region but actually sits on the symbolic border separating the Highlands and the Lowlands. It was taken over by the Lang Brothers in 1876 and it was renamed the Glengoyne Distillery in 1905. Since the 1960s the Lang Brothers has been a subsidiary of Robertson & Baxter. Robertson & Baxter which ultimately became The Edrington Group.

The Edrington Group sold Glengoyne distillery, a large quantity of whisky stock and the Lang's whisky brand to Ian Macleod Distillers in 2003. Ian Macleod has marketed Glengoyne more as a single malt in recent years and has introduced a range of new Glengoyne expressions.

About a 30% of the malt produced is sold as single malt the remainder going into blends such as Lang Supreme and Lang Select.
