Review of
the new Glenglassaugh Portsoy, a peaty
dram matured in combination of sherry,
bourbon and port casks.
 15 years on since Glenglassaugh
Distillery was awakened from its slumber
the iconic coastal Highland whisky is
experiencing a rebirth with the
unveiling of a new portfolio which
recently launched with three new single
malt whiskies and a new design
direction. Glenglassaugh Portsoy in one
of the trio of new single malts which
now makes up the Glenglassaugh new look
whisky range.
Glenglassaugh Portsoy takes its name the
neighbouring harbour
village of Portsoy, Aberdeenshire which
is just two miles from the distillery,
as well as its name it also takes its
inspiration from the villages coastal
location as this is a richly peated dram
offering whisky drinkers a deep maritime
flavour. The peated spirit of Portsoy
was matured in a combination of sherry,
bourbon and port casks and it was
bottled at the flavoursome strength of
49.1% ABV..

Tasting Notes:
Nose: Gentle
sweet peat infused vanilla toffee
with the slightest touch of a liquorice
edge which is all
rounded by a touch of sultana fruit
perhaps from the sherry casks in the
mix.
Taste: Light
golden syrup treacle toffee with a wee
bit of a honeyed edge the toffee is
infused with the most delicious sweet
peat smoke, some lovely gentle peppered
spice as well as a gentle fruit mix of
port soaked raisin and orange. Some late
coffee.
Finish: A
fusion of sweet peat smoke, honey,
vanilla and treacle toffee is equally
matched by the gentle fruit mix of port
soaked raisin and orange before fading
to let the now slightly drying oak and
spice have the final say.
Comment:
A delicious balance of treacle toffee,
fruit, peat, oak and a light touch of
honey, the bottling strength simply
adds to and prolongs the whole flavour
pleasure. By no means a peat monster, if
you fancy a gentler peaty dram to sip
over the warmer summer months then I can
recommend this. Loved it!
