Scotch Whisky
legends gathered last week at The Scotch
Whisky Experience in Edinburgh, where
Raymond Davidson — creator of the
world-renowned Glencairn Glass — hosted
a special dinner celebrating the glass’s
25th anniversary.
The exclusive event reunited some of the
whisky industry’s most distinguished
Master Blenders, Distillers, and
figures, including Richard Paterson OBE
(The Dalmore), David Stewart MBE
(William Grant & Sons), John Ramsay
(formerly of Edrington), and Charlie
MacLean MBE (whisky writer and
consultant). All played a key role in
supporting Raymond when he first
developed the Glencairn Glass a quarter
of a century ago.
A notable absence from the evening was
the late Michael Jackson, the legendary
whisky writer and the first to be
inducted into the industry’s Hall of
Fame. As an early advocate for Raymond’s
creation and the first to publicly
endorse the Glencairn Glass, his
influence was instrumental in
establishing its reputation and legacy.
Robert Hicks (formerly of Allied
Distillers, now with Pernod Ricard) was
another early supporter, though unable
to attend the event.
First introduced in 2000, the Glencairn
Glass was born from Raymond’s ambition
to design a vessel that would elevate
the aroma and flavour of whisky. With
the backing of Scotland’s top Master
Blenders and whisky experts — and a
successful debut at Whisky Live London —
his concept evolved into what is now
universally recognised as the official
whisky glass. Over the past 25 years,
more than 50 million Glencairn Glasses
have been sold worldwide, with over 5
million purchased annually across global
markets.
The glass has earned numerous accolades
over the years, including the Queen’s
Award for Innovation (2006), the Queen’s
Award for International Trade (2012 and
2017), and the Malt Advocate Industry
Leader Award, among others — all
acknowledging its enduring impact on the
whisky world.
Reflecting on the milestone, Raymond
said: "When I first sketched the concept
for the Glencairn Glass, I wanted to
create something that truly brought out
the best in whisky. The input from
incredible Master Blenders, whisky
friends and legends in the industry was
invaluable - and it’s been a joy to
celebrate with them again, 25 years on."
Julie Trevisan-Hunter, Marketing
Director at The Scotch Whisky Experience
said: "It has been a pleasure working
with Glencairn over the past 25 years,
and hosting this very special
celebration is a real honour. Raymond,
Paul, and Scott have been part of the
whisky family for so long that it’s hard
to imagine the industry without them.
Their commitment and support genuinely
matter to all of us who care about
Scotch. The Glencairn Glass fits
perfectly with our mission to help the
world fall in love with Scotch whisky.
Every visitor who comes through our
doors heads home with the right glass in
hand to continue their Scotch whisky
journey, remembering their time with us,
and sharing the stories of their
travels."
The reunion dinner formed part of a
wider series of events marking this
major milestone for Glencairn Crystal —
the family-owned company founded by
Raymond more than 40 years ago and now
led by his sons, Paul and Scott
Davidson.
