Gordon &
MacPhail unveil their 2019 Spring
Collection, an outturn of 21 whiskies
including from a rarely seen distillery,
a 38 year old Coleburn 1981
Private Collection bottling.

Gordon
& MacPhail, the family owned and run
Speyside based independent whisky maker
and bottler,
has announced its 2019 Spring
Collection, unveiling a series of
21 whiskies which draws upon their
unrivalled depth and breadth of
knowledge which the company has gained
from maturing spirit from over 100
Scottish distilleries since 1895 when
the company was founded.
Since its foundation, Gordon & MacPhail
has carefully matched spirit to oak
casks which are sent to distilleries
throughout Scotland, filled with
new-make spirit, and matured either at
the distillery of origin or in the
firm’s own bonded warehouse in Elgin.
One of the rarer highlights of G&M's
2019 Spring Collection outturn is the Gordon &
MacPhail 1981 from Coleburn Distillery
which is the latest edition to be
released in their ‘Private Collection’
range.
The Gordon & MacPhail Coleburn 1981
Private Collection single malt, single
cask whisky has been matured in G&M's
specially selected cask at its warehouse
in Elgin for the past 38 years. Spirit
from the Coleburn Distillery which was
mothballed back in in 1985 was
traditionally used in blending which has
made it quite a rare single malt but
luckily Gordon & MacPhail acquired some
of the spirit and using their knowledge
of the Coleburn spirit, maturation and of
course their creativity they carefully
matched it with a Refill Sherry
hogshead to create this now rarely seen
single malt making it a very appropriate
addition the their exclusive ‘Private
Collection’ range.
Laid down on 11th March 1981 to mature
in a Refill Sherry Hogshead Cask No.
476 and considering it is a 38 year old
whisky the Gordon & MacPhail Coleburn
1981 Private Collection was bottled at a
very impressive strength 55.9% ABV on
14th March 2019. Described by G&M as
having a distinct mahogany hue and rich
flavours of Sherry-soaked fruit,
liquorice, and dark chocolate, and a
long finish brimming with toffee notes
and a hint of smoke.
The Gordon & MacPhail Coleburn 1981
Private Collection is a very limited
release with only 101 bottles available
worldwide and it has a UK RRP of £1,250
Two more notable whiskies from the 2019
Spring Collection include Connoisseurs
Choice Glenburgie 1998 RRP £136. With
just 245 bottles available, this whisky
offers a unique opportunity to own a 20
year old whisky which is rarely bottled
as a single malt. Connoisseurs Choice
Ledaig 2006 from the Tobermory
distillery has been crafted using peated
new-make spirit and paired with a
specially selected first-fill Sherry
hogshead which should be of interest to
those who are partial to a peated
sherried single malt of which I know
there are many of you, the Ledaig 2006
will have a UK RRP of £73.
You will find the Gordon & MacPhail
Coleburn 1981 Private Collection and the
rest of G&M's 2019 Spring Collection
outturn, which totals 21 new single malt
whiskies in total, available from
specialist online whisky retailers
such as The Whisky Exchange
