Aerstone Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a new single malt whisky range from William Grant & Sons which they recently launched with two very different 10 Year Old expressions the ‘Rich and Smoky’ Aerstone Land Cask 10 Year Old and the ‘Smooth and Easy’ Aerstone Sea Cask 10 Year Old.

More about the new Aerstone whisky range here:

http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/aerstonewhisky.htm

And I have reviewed the two new whiskies, which for their price I was impressed with:

For now both whiskies will only be available from Tesco

I like the sounds of these, always good to hear of new whiskies within my limited budget. I had already looked at them in Tesco, I think i will pick up a bottle of the smoky Aerstone Land Cask tomorrow.

Thanks William, I'll be keeping these in mind next time I'm in the market for a bottle.

I will try and pick a bottle up, but I’m sure my Tesco will not have them on shelves, as it’s got to be the worse Tesco I’ve ever seen

Interesting, this is the first I have heard of Aerstone. I wonder why they have not disclosed the distillery the whiskies originated from and have created a new whisky brand instead, must be a marketing thing I suppose. Sound good wherever they were distilled.

What on earth is a Land Cask and a Sea Cask? And the release says they aim to 'simplify' things?! Laughing

Williams piece says
Quote:
William Grant & Sons launch Aerstone, a new Single Malt Scotch Whisky brand which aims to simplify the taste messaging in the single malt category.

So I would say that the clear "taste messaging" on each bottle does simplify things as in "Land Cask Rich and Smoky" and "Sea Cask Smooth and Easy" it couldn't be simpler really.

Got to be worth a go at these prices and being a supermarket release we will surely see them on offer. Thanks for your thoughts William

Maybe it's because I'm not a whisky newbie, but my brain cannot compute the link between sea cask <--> smooth and easy and land cask <--> rich and peaty.

If you say "sea cask", I expect the whisky to have a decise coastal influence, maybe a gentle smoke... not vanilla and almonds. A heavily sea-influenced whisky in itself is something that's all but for a beginner, hence I'd stay waaay clear to anything that might suggest such kind of liquid rest in the bottle.

Even when I was a noob I connected the concept of "coastal whisky" to ocean flavors, not citrus and vanilla. I'd have been hella confused to deal with a "sea cask" that taste like vanilla fudge. I'd have asked myself whether other "sea casks" are supposed to taste like this, if this is what coastal whisky is about.

If it's sweet, fruity and vanilla-y, why not call it something more relevant, I dunno "orchard cask", "toffee shop cask", anything really.

Exactly what Drame Blanche said - why is it 'simple' that sea cask = smooth and easy (whatever that means) and land cask = rich and peaty? How is it a connection that anyone (regardless of experience with whisky) can intuitively make?

Also, making up new terms that don't mean anything doesn't equal simplifying in my book.

What I read as the tasting message is "Smooth and Easy" and "Rich and Smoky" I would say that is pretty simple, perhaps just me.

interesting; but sea cask that is like Speyside, glad I'm not the only one who is scratching their head wondering where the coastal saltiness has gone.

Thanks for the review, as no doubt I will see this in Tesco on my next visit and has put me in the picture. Thanks for the review making it of interest and excellent that it has an age statement. (I'm not a champion of NAS)

Names and profiles don't make much sense to me either.
