Review of the new William Grant's Aerstone Land Cask 10 Year Old.
Aerstone
Land Cask 10 Year Old is one of two new
whiskies from William Grant & Sons
launched under their new Aerstone single
malt Scotch whisky brand aimed at
simplifying the taste messaging in the
single malt category.
Aerstone
Land Cask 10 Year Old is described as
‘Rich and Smoky’ and is a peated single
malt heroing the use of
highland peat in the malting. This
whisky’s flavours are developed in
warehouses located further inland,
allowing the smoky notes to shine
through.
Bottled at 40% ABV it has initially
launched in Tesco supermarkets
nationwide.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Vanilla sweet smoke and a mild mix of
gentle tangy and candied orange.
Taste:
A deliciously rich and silky smooth sweet peaty
delivery, everything the nose told you
was coming and more, the brown sugared peat is
joined by a touch of liquorice, a little
vanilla toffee, salted caramel, a little candied
fruit mix of lemon, orange
and pear and a lovely touch of oak.
Finish:
The lovely vanilla sweet peat smoke just
lingers long into the finish eventually
fading to leave some lemon citrus and
mildly drying oak.
Comment:
A delicious new single malt whisky from
William Grant that breaks down Scotch
whisky regional boundaries and merges
the traditional Speyside and Islay
styles of whisky together in the form of
Aerstone Land Cask, and they have done
it exceptionally well.
This just might be what the love child of the
discontinued Balvenie 10 year old and a
smooth peated Islay whisky would taste
like, undoubtedly a close relative of
the smoky Ailsa Bay single malt launched
by William Grant a couple of years ago
and just as good in quality but at £30 a
bottle this is an affordable quality
rich smoky everyday dramming whisky.
SMW Score
92/100
As I said above the new Aerstone
whisky range has initially launched in
Tesco supermarkets nationwide but no
doubt in the future it will be available from specialist online whisky
retailers such as
The Whisky Exchange,
The Whisky Shop and
Master of Malt but for now it is
only available in Tesco. |
