The Kilchoman fans amongst you will probably know that a limited amount of Kilchoman Sonaig was released in 2015, today the distillery announced that it is now ready for global distribution and from today it becomes the second continuous release from the Islay distillery.

Kilchoman Sanaig is a marriage of sherry and bourbon cask maturation, bottled at 46% ABV and with an RRP of £52.50 it is a new permanent addition to the Kilchoman core range.

I do like the Machir Bay with the oloroso sherry finish so Sanaig should have more sherry character than the Machir Bay, they are pushing it a bit with the £52 asking price but I guess with such a small output they can ask these prices. The question is will it match up to the quality of the likes of Ardbeg Uigeadail which is similarly priced.

Personally I think that Machir Bay is outstanding and an expression with a bit more sherry is very appealing to me.

I can't even tell the Machir Bay is sherry-finished! (not that it's a bad thing) In fact even the Uigeadail these days is pretty dry for a sherried whisky, in my opinion.

I found the Machir Bay more sherried 2 or 3 years ago, the last bottle I had, there was barely a trace of sherry, still very good. Hopefully the sherry is making a good contribution to the new Sanaig.

I tasted the new Kilchoman Sanaig, no surprises given the type of casks used for maturation and its age, another cracking expression from Kilchoman. I added my tasting note here:

Sounds great, though the Lagavulin 8 will have to take priority for me for now!

Yes it does sound good, and the good thing is it is part of the permanent core range. I just bought a Machir Bay this week so perhaps pick up a Sanaig with my next order.
