Introducing
the new Fettercairn 18 Year Old Scottish
Oak Finish, a marriage of American White
Oak casks which have been finish in 100%
Scottish Oak.
 Fettercairn
distillery recently announced the
release of its inaugural 18 Year Old
whisky, Fettercairn 18 Year Old
Scottish Oak Finish, the Speyside
distillery's first ever whisky finished
in locally sourced Scottish Oak.
I got word of this release a few weeks
ago and
I held off from announcing this new Fettercairn 18 Year Old
Scottish Oak Finish as I was expecting a
review sample which didn't materialise
so I cant comment on its quality but as
it is now appearing on the shelves of
Whisky Shops I
thought I would share with you what Fettercairn say about it.
They tell me that the new Fettercairn 18
is the culmination of years of planning
and innovation, a marriage of American White Oak casks
which have been finish in 100% Scottish
Oak, sourced from the Scottish
Highlands. They say it is
progressive and innovative in style and
substance and that this whisky celebrates what
makes Fettercairn different – from the
surprisingly tropical -house style
achieved by the distinctive copper
cooling ring distillation; to their
future focused, innovative approach to
local sourcing and working with the land
in Aberdeenshire – ‘The Garden of
Scotland’.
Bottled at 46.8%, naturally coloured and
non-chill filtered, this single malt is
said to showcase a meticulous approach
to cask management and whisky making.
With a character defined by richness and
depth, it plays on mature fruit
flavours, toasted oak, fresh patisserie
aromas and rich mouthfeel with soft
spice balances cacao and berry fruits.
Gregg Glass, Master Whisky Maker,
explains: "Fettercairn 18 is a
culmination of an approach to whisky
making I have developed across a number
of years. This first release reflects
the dedication not just of myself, but
of our partners ‘from Forest to Field’,
who each played a role in rekindling the
skills required to harvest Scottish Oak.
At Fettercairn we are passionate about
the potential of Scottish Oak and the
unique flavour characteristics it offers
to the whisky maker."
The new Fettercairn 18 was brought to
life through Fettercairn's
ground-breaking Scottish Oak programme
and calling on a 100% finish in Scottish
oak sourced from the Scottish Highlands,
this whisky represents a long-term
vision coming to life. Born from an
initiative which extends far beyond cask
production to the creation of a circular
economy and the future-proofing Scottish
Oak for the next generation of whisky
makers.
Like many whiskies of this age these
days you will need deep pockets if you want
to taste the new Fettercairn 18 Year Old
Scottish Oak Finish, it has a RRP of £175
and it is now available from specialist online whisky

William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Sugared almond, a little honey and
nutmeg, a little vanilla sweetness also,
some citrusy lemon and mango add a
fruity dimension all with a trimmed oak
tannin and gentle spicy edge.
Taste:
A lovely gentle mix of mango, lemon and
grapefruit piggybacks in on the sweet
oak sugars and spices, subtle honeycomb
and vanilla mingles amongst the now more
toasted oak spices, a touch of coffee
and some late dark berries add another
side to the fruit.
Finish:
The
sugars go first leaving the oak spices,
fruit and vanilla to tussle it out for
the final say, a tussle which the
slightly drying oak wins, some late
coffee notes.
Comment:
Another great dram from Fettercairn, the
Scottish oak has certainly had its say
in this whisky but it doesn't fully
overwhelm Fettercairn's fruity DNA, a
pleasurable balance of fruit and oak.
