East Asia Whisky Company Releases Macallan Mizunara Whiskies

27th September 2024
The East Asia Whisky Company has announced the release of Macallan Mizunara Single Malts crafted in partnership with Glencairn Crystal.

East Asia Whisky Company Macallan Mizunara 33 Year Old 1990 Komorebi Edition

East Asia Whisky Company, an independent bottler, is set to release an exclusive collection of highly limited-edition Macallan single malt Scotch whiskies this autumn. These rare whiskies will be presented in stunning decanters, each hand-crafted by the renowned Scottish glassware maker, Glencairn Crystal.

For those unfamiliar with the East Asia Whisky Company, it is an award-winning boutique independent bottler specialising in fine Scotch, Japanese whisky, and Caribbean rum. Established in 2016, the company is dedicated to crafting luxury spirits of the highest quality, offering bespoke solutions and expertise in cask aging, bottling, and packaging.

Starting from early October, the East Asia Whisky Company will be introducing three exceptional whiskies: the Macallan Mizunara 33 Year Old 1990 Komorebi Edition, the third release in a series of remarkable single malts, alongside Macallan Origins, a unique duo curated in collaboration with Ephemerus Concepts.

Macallan Mizunara 33 Year Old 1990 Komorebi Edition: Inspired by the Japanese term "Komorebi," meaning "sunlight filtering through trees," this whisky was distilled in 1990 at the Macallan Distillery and matured for 31 years in an ex-Bourbon cask before being transferred to a rare Japanese oak cask made of Mizunara from the forests of Hokkaido. With only 100 bottles available, this marks the final release in a coveted series, following the 1989 Macallan Mizunara No. 2 and the 1988 Macallan Mizunara Edition No. 1, both of which sold out.

To honour the whisky's significance, East Asia Whisky Company collaborated with Glencairn Crystal to create a bespoke decanter that embodies the essence of Komorebi. Each decanter features an intricate silver engraving of an oak blossom branch that wraps around the bottle, with a translucent Kanji inscription reading "Macallan Mizunara Komorebi." This oak blossom motif continues a design tradition from the previous releases, with the branch growing further around the bottle with each edition.

The Macallan Mizunara 33 Year Old 1990 Komorebi Edition will be auctioned via Bonhams' Finest Whisky & Spirits online sale from September 23 to October 3. Any unsold bottles will be available through select retailers from mid-October, with pricing upon request.

Macallan 33 Year Old Origins: Also arriving in October, East Asia Whisky Company and Ephemerus Concepts will release Macallan Origins, a limited-edition set of two 33 Year Old Highland Single Malts. These whiskies pay tribute to the Macallan distillery's heritage and the journey of the liquid through two distinct cask finishes. Both whiskies began in a single sherry cask, with half later finishing its maturation in a curated Hokkaido Mizunara cask for nearly two years.

This release is part of a "study in oak," offering whisky enthusiasts the opportunity to compare the original sherry-aged whisky with its Mizunara-finished counterpart—an unprecedented exploration in whisky.

Each whisky is presented in a handcrafted, lead-free crystal decanter from Glencairn Crystal, with gold hand-engraved lettering. The sherry cask expression features a Pictish crescent and arrow motif, symbolizing Scottish strength and heritage, while the Mizunara cask bottle bears a design of a broken Japanese fan with cherry blossoms, representing transformation during aging. Both bottles are housed in a luxurious leather-bound box created by Bill Amberg Studio.

The Macallan 33 Year Old Origins setThe Macallan 33 Year Old Origins set will debut at Bonhams in late October.

Christian Leusder, East Asia Whisky Company Director, said: "The whisky spent years perfecting in these very rare casks. With such precious spirits it is vital that they are housed in decanters worthy of them. This is why our collaboration with Glencairn Crystal is so important – we have the same core values in terms of the simplicity of design, attention to detail, and the pursuit of perfection."

Scott Davidson, Glencairn Crystal’s New Product Development Director said: "It has been a privilege to be a part of the journey of these incredible whiskies. The design and creation of these striking decanters has challenged our design team and craftspeople to push beyond their creative limits and the end products are beautiful pieces of art - something to be very proud of".

East Asia Whisky Company, known for its rare and exceptional spirits and collaborations with some of the world's most prestigious distilleries and brands, is set to release The Spirit of Shangri-La this year.
