The Deveron
18 Year Old Review
Sitting
at the top of the new The Deveron
Highland single malt whisky range from
the Macduff Distillery is The Deveron 18
year old.
Even the most ardent whisky connoisseurs
amongst you could be forgiven for not
recognising The Deveron name as a single
malt that is because the Macduff
Distillery owners John Dewar & Co have
rebranded from Glen Deveron and launched
a new range of expressions under The
Deveron name.
This is the first time in the
distillery's history that there has been
a range of expressions available at any
one time from the the Macduff
distillery. There was talk of a Deveron 25 year old when the plans for a
new Deveron whisky range was unveiled,
no sign of it yet so for the time being
this new 18 year old sits at the top of
the new The Deveron domestic market range.
Matured in a combination of Spanish
sherry and American ex-bourbon oak
casks, mainly hogsheads, it has been
bottled at 40% ABV.
Similar to the other bottlings in the new
range, The Deveron 18 year old packaging
has a subtle northern Scotland maritime
coastal community look and feel to it.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose: Honey, toffee, dried
sherried fruits, nutty, just a hint of
oak.
Taste: Medium bodied, smooth
entry with a honeyed sweetness leading
the way, vanilla, touch of burnt
raisins, some ripe plum,
nutty, tobacco, some tangy orange and
toffee apple, pear, a touch of
late black treacle sugar.
Finish: A short finish with honey sugar coated oak
notes and a touch of tangy orange which
quickly fade
leaving a little drying nuttiness.
Comment:
This has had a lovely quality sherry oak
influence which makes this malt. A
shorter finish than expected which lost
it a few points but still an enjoyable
dram. Some of the older single malts
released by Dewar's under the "Last
Great Malts of Scotland" banner have
been good but suffer from serious
overpricing but I would say that in
comparison to other 18 year old single
malts of this quality available today,
the asking price for The Deveron 18 year
old is fair. I would loved to have
tasted it at a higher ABV even if it had
added a pounds to the price but I could
say that about most whiskies.
SMW Score
89/100
The Deveron 18 year old has an RRP of
£70.00 and will be
