The proposed
new Dál Riata Distillery in Campbeltown
awaits planning permission, it will be
located in the heart of Campbeltown and
will produce 850,000 litres of
pure alcohol a year.
Some more details of the planned Dál
Riata Distillery In Campbeltown have
been unveiled, Dal Riata Distillery Ltd
has submitted a planning application to
Argyll and Bute Council for permission
to build the new Dál Riata
Distillery, which will have a 850,000
litres of pure alcohol a year capacity,
in Kinloch Road, overlooking Campbeltown
Loch right in the heart of Campbeltown.
The application is for a mixed use
development comprising of a distillery,
visitor centre, shop and self-catering
apartments. The proposed distillery if
it gets the go-ahead will have an
impressive glass frontage which allows
views from the outside in of the two
large working copper stills, whilst the
balcony in front will offer some of the
best views of Campbeltown Loch, and will
be used for events and tastings.
The dilapidated warehouses currently on
the site are to be renovated and
converted into self-catering apartments,
which will sleep up to 10 people and
offer views over the distillery and
across the Loch.
The current vacant shop on Longrow
adjoining the site will be developed
into a visitor centre and
conference/tasting room.
Importantly, the project will provide
employment for around 20 local people,
and Dal Riata Distillery Ltd have
pledged to provide trainee positions
within the workforce.
The long-term plan for the distillery
includes building a warehousing facility
at Macrihanish airport for storage of
the casks, and it is hoped expansion of
that facility might provide cask storage
and bottling for private clients.
The owners are keen to pay homage to the
history of Campbeltown by incorporating
a museum within the visitor centre
dedicated to the history of whisky
distillation within the town. There are
also plans to develop the visitor centre
to be a venue to hire for events.
Space is being incorporated within the
proposed distillery building to allow
production to be increased if required,
without any external expansion.
If planning is granted, the project will
cost around £4.5M.

bottlings:
To mark the occasion South
Star Spirits and Dál Riata
Distillery, have
been released three bottlings under the South Star
Spirits label: Highland, Speyside
and Islay. Each release is a classic
expression of the area from which
they have been produced and each
expression is a vatting of 10
Hogsheads:
- South Star Spirit’s Highland is a 10
Year Old single malt. The liquid
itself is nutty, rich and chewy with
a robustness expected of a Highland
whisky.
- South Star Spirit’s Speyside is also
a 10 Year Old single malt. The nose
is fruity and floral, leading onto a
salty- sweet palate of toffee and
syrup.
- South Star Spirit’s Islay is an 8
Year Old single malt. The intense
peaty liquid boasts those classic
Islay flavour notes of smoke, sweet
vanilla and sea salt on the palate.
There are 2,200 bottles of each
of South Star Spirit’s first three
bottlings available worldwide; all are bottled
at 48% ABV, non-chill filtered and
are naturally colour and they will
be available in the UK from specialist online
